OSDE Update

Fine Arts Standards

A public comment window will open for the standards over the next few weeks. Public comment is the process where teachers, administrators, parents, community members, etc., may give feedback on the standards. The standards will be available to view online and there will be an accompanying google form for viewers to submit comments. Every comment will be addressed by the dance, drama/theatre, music, and visual art writing teams. We especially value teacher feedback and would appreciate your participation. When the public comment window opens, there will be multiple notifications sent out over social media and through this newsletter. More information about the standards process is available on the OSDE website.

Conferences

There are two major conferences in October - Oklahoma Music Educators Associaion (OkMEA) October Conference and the Oklahoma Art Education Association (OAEA) Fall Conference. Oklahoma Arts Council Supply Grants for Visual and Performing Arts

OAC logo

Teachers and education leaders across the state have made it clear to the Oklahoma Arts Council that classroom art supplies are one of their greatest needs in delivering high quality visual and performing arts education programs. Funding for art supplies is essential for Oklahoma schools to sustain valuable art programs that help students succeed in their education and beyond.

To meet this critical need of schools in our state, the Oklahoma Arts Council offers Classroom Supply Grants of up to $500 per site per school year to purchase supplies and materials for visual and performing arts instruction that takes place during the school day.

Application Timeline

September 1 - Grant applications are made available. Schools may submit an application anytime through the deadline.

November 1 - Application deadline

OkMEA October Conference

OkMEA

The 2019 OkMEA October Conference will be held at Oklahoma City University on Thursday, October 17th, 2019. Sessions will be held for elementary, vocal, and instrumental music education. Visit the OkMEA website for more information. The conference is FREE for first year teachers!

Beginning Music Teacher Workshop

The OkMEA Beginning Teacher Workshop (BTW) is designed to foster a network of early-career music educators across Oklahoma. Each year, OkMEA will host a BTW in the first weeks of the academic year. We invite clinicians from across the state and beyond to lead active and invigorating sessions on mentoring, area-specific music instruction, and social gatherings. The BTW affords novice teachers opportunities to learn, grow, and build professional relationships with their colleagues. Additionally, the BTW includes sessions for veteran teachers who serve as mentors in our One-to-One program. These clinics provide support and development of effective mentoring skills, while providing a space for mentors to share ideas. Please join us October 16th and 17th for this “kick-off” event to both your school year and your career as a music educator!  Also, if you know a first year music teacher in your area, please forward this information to them! Details are available on the OkMEA website
