Augmentative and Alternative Communication Nationwide Survey

Alexandra Da Fonte, a faculty member in the Department of Special Education at Vanderbilt University is working on a project related to the preparation of special education teachers. The project is titled: Augmentative and Alternative Communication Survey for Special Education Teacher. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the content knowledge and skills of pre- and in-service teachers on augmentative and alternative communication to successfully implement these strategies in the classroom setting. The goal is to gather as much information as possible from current special education teachers to enhance the preparation of future special education teachers.

They have asked our office (OSDE-SES) to forward this survey to special education teachers across the state. Special education teachers who complete this survey can choose to enter a drawing to win one of several Amazon gift cards. Thank you in advance for your help and support.

School Based Health Services – Update on Same Day Billing

Oklahoma State Department of Education (OSDE) works closely with the Oklahoma Health Care Authority (OHCA) to review the School-Based Health Services (SBHS) program for ways to further encourage districts to participate and to help subsidize provision of medical services with appropriate Medicaid reimbursement.  Due to an update in the approval processes for therapies provided in the school and outpatient settings, the schools’ therapy limits will be driven by the IEP and the private therapy will be processed by their separate prior authorization (PA) request process. There should not be any issues of duplicate same-day billing of services in regards to IEP and outpatient therapy services.   We are still advising that coordination of care with private practices and other providers be in place, these are medically necessary services and in the best interest of the student.  If your district is having issues with any private therapy practices in telling parents not to sign billing consent for IEP related services, or any other issues, to please email Lana Brown at Lana.Brown@okhca.org.

AR-DADD Puberty and Beyond Training

Puberty is a challenging time for all youth but can present even more challenges for young people who have developmental disabilities, including autism and intellectual disabilities. It is important that ALL adolescents learn about their developing bodies and emerging sexuality. The training will offer parents factual information about developmentally appropriate instructional strategies for teaching the social skills, self awareness, and safety skills necessary to their children.
