Two students from Tulsa selected to attend prestigious National Youth Science Camp

Oklahoma City (April 16, 2019) – State Superintendent of Public Instruction Joy Hofmeister today announced that two Tulsa high school seniors, Anna Byrd and Caleb Freese, will be Oklahoma’s delegates to the National Youth Science Camp in West Virginia this summer. Both will attend the prestigious residential program for high school seniors on full scholarship.

Through the camp, operated by the National Science Youth Foundation, two delegates from each state take part in more than three weeks of immersive scientific study and research in West Virginia.

“I am so proud of these two outstanding science students, and delighted that they are from my hometown of Tulsa,” Hofmeister said.“Their exemplary academic and service records have prepared them for this amazing opportunity to explore STEM fields in the company of other extraordinary young people and distinguished professionals. This experience may provide the foundation for these young leaders to deliver the next wave of innovation to scientific problem-solving. I salute Anna and Caleb for their accomplishments – and the accomplishments ahead.”

Byrd, who attends Holland Hall, created a Diversity Council and is co-president of the Social Justice Club at her school. An accomplished pianist and violinist, she plays the latter instrument on the Tulsa Youth Symphony Orchestra and has worked as a research assistant at the Laureate Institute for Brain Research and interned at the OSU Center for Health Sciences.

She is a U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad National Semifinalist and a National Merit Finalist.

Freese, a National Merit Semifinalist who attends Metro Christian Academy, has earned academic and extracurricular honors in debate, soccer and mathematics and serves as vice president of the National Honor Society and captain of the debate club at his school. He is a volunteer at New Life Ranch and the CommonGround Church Food Pantry.

Byrd and Freese will attend the National Youth Science June 27-July 20.
