OKCU Culturally Relevant Music Education Workshops

Bass School of Music

June 5 – 7 – Leading Leaders: The Essentials of Student Leadership Development

This three-day workshop invites teachers to attend the first two days to develop their ideas and approaches to developing student leadership in their classrooms or ensembles.  During these two days, teachers attending will develop a one-day mini leadership workshop for their students who are invited to attend on the third day.  This is hands-on, practical, and applicable at any level of instruction.

June 10-  14 – Music for Students with Special Needs

This workshop will be led by two experts in the field.  Dr. Ryan Hourigan will do a three-day intensive workshop on the initiative he leads at Ball State University called the Prism Project.  This project brings together students with special needs with music educators and community members to provide an authentic music making experience for all involved.  It is a powerful model that he is willing to share so that it can be replicated.  In addition, Ms. Julia Sims, a certified music therapist, will spend a day with attendees on therapeutical approaches that have application in the music classroom.

June 18 – 21 – World Music in the Elementary Music Classroom

Once again, Dr. Lani Garner will lead a week of music making and learning from cultures around the world.  This is a hands-on workshop and attendees will leave with ideas and materials they can use in their classrooms immediately.  There is a special emphasis on music technology that can be used to bring world music into the classroom

June 24-28 – Modern Band 101:  Popular Music Pedagogy

Dr. Bryan Powell will be with us this week to lead a workshop implementing an approach to teaching popular music ensembles at all levels of instruction from elementary to high school.  No prior experience on guitar, bass, piano, or drums is needed, but attendees will leave with plenty experience and materials to start a modern band program in their school.  Many music teachers are wondering what to do with the music appreciation or humanities classes they are teaching and this approach may be the answer they are looking for.  It is highly engaging and easy to learn at the basic level.

All workshops are $200, but there are discounts for attending multiple workshops.  Anyone can attend any two workshops for $350, any three for $500 and all four for $600.  Current university students can attend at half-price.  Professional development credit is provided.  Visit https://www.okcu.edu/music/community/workshops for more information.
