Computer Science Week: Days 2, 3, & 4

I apologize for days two, three, and four being delivered together! This newsletter features one professional development opportunity for teachers, an "Hour of Code" feature, and ways to bring female students into the world of Computer Science.

Online Professional Development

There are a few places to find free online learning opportunities for teaching Computer Science.

  • CodeHS: Although this has many coding course options, it also has a intro to Cyber Security Course and an Intro to Computer Science Principles Course. It also has learning modules for students.
  • Teaching Computer Science Fundamentals: From Code.org, this is an introduction to computer science principles and the K-5 resources offered by Code.org
  • Bringing CS to your School: This site features strategies for bringing Computer Science training and courses to your school

Hour of Code

The Office of Curriculum and Instruction participated in an Hour of Code yesterday; it was so much fun! Many had never coded before, so the dance party and Harry Potter activities from code.org were great introductions to the coding world. Although Computer Science is not exclusively coding, these activities are easy ways to get your students (and yourself!) interested in some of the great things about CS.

Women in Technology

Computer Science is still a male-dominated field. This article lists ten ways to get your female students interested in Computer Science, and it also features a link to Dot Diva, which has articles relating Computer Science to many different career pathways.
