OSDE Update

Grants
The OSDE Fine Arts website has been updated.  Teachers may want to check out the Funding Sources section for ideas on grants and other opportunities.  Many Oklahoma fine arts teachers have received travel funding from Fund for Teachers and the application window just opened!

Museum Visits

Keep in mind that museums across Oklahoma have travel funds available for school visits.  The funds pay for transportation costs and may offset museum entry fees for students.  Visit museum websites for more information!

Title Programs and Federal Funding

Title 1

Title I funding can be used to support fine arts!  Check out https://www.title1arts.org for information.

Title IV, Part A

The funds from Title IV Part A can be carried over from year to year.   If your district received a smaller amount this year ($15,000), they could rollover that amount to next year to fund bigger projects.  Like many other federal funds, Title IV, Part A funds have a 27-month window for use in districts.

Title IV, Part D

Title IV Part D funds go to rural schools and are known as Rural Education Achievement Programs (REAP).  Districts could combine Parts A and D to increase fine arts opportunities for students.

Examples of Potential Uses of Title IV, Part A Funding for the Arts

  • Contract with outside providers to bring training to the district.
  • Contract with an arts organization to provide student learning opportunities.
  • Purchase music, costumes, or copyright permission.
  • Hire new staff or dedicate additional time for existing staff.
  • Pay the registration, travel costs, and/or substitute reimbursement for staff to attend targeted professional learning activities.

Don't know where to start?  The Opportunity to Learn (OTL) Standards identify resources that teachers, schools, and districts need for all students to achieve a quality fine arts education.  OTL Standards aim to ensure that all students have meaningful learning experiences in each of the artistic processes by outlining the necessary resources to administer basic and quality arts programs for all students.  The OTL Standards may help your district conduct their needs assessment, which is part of the Title IV, Part A funding requirements.

If you have questions, contact Elizabeth Maughan at (405) 522-0863 or the Office of Federal Programs at (405) 521-2846.

Oklahoma Contemporary

Oklahoma Contemporary believes that enrichment field trips contribute to the development of stronger critical-thinking skills, empathy, and curiosity about art and culture. We support this by investing in a program that covers expenses associated with a field trip(s) for local K-12 students to the art center. While at Oklahoma Contemporary, students will engage with works of contemporary art in the galleries and take part in an interactive, hands-on experience in the studio that is informed by the art, artists, and ideas on view. We are strongly committed to providing a positive learning environment that values and rewards thoughtful questioning, recognizes mistakes as learning opportunities, and encourages open dialogue. To request a field trip, visit www.oklahomacontemporary.org

ShakeFest 19 - Oklahoma ESU National Shakespeare Competition

Shake Fest

 Thursday, January 31, 2019

Shakespeare Competition 10:00-11:30 am

Shakespeare Festival 11:30-1:30 pm

Deer Creek High School Auditorium, Edmond, Oklahoma

Check in is from 9:30-9:45; the contest begins promptly at 10:00 and should be completed by 11:30.

High school students from across Oklahoma and Western Arkansas perform a 20-line monologue and a sonnet. The 1st place winner will receive an all-expense paid trip to New York City to perform at Lincoln Center. Cash prizes are awarded to the 2nd ($100) and 3rd place ($50) winners. There is NO COST to participate.

Also part of the day is the non-competitive English Speaking Union (ESU) Oklahoma Shakespeare Festival. Students from grades 6-12 will perform scenes, monologues, or other creative performances using Shakespeare’s language (Maximum of 2 minutes X the number of actors with a limit of 6 minutes). They will also participate in a short performance-based activity led by nationally recognized Shakespeare educators. Collaborating with classmates to explore Shakespeare's language, and then sharing that experience with students from different schools and backgrounds, is of immense educational value.

This is not your typical drama festival. By design, this festival is also geared towards English classes and students who may have never acted before as well as drama students. For us, performance is a means to an end: making Shakespeare's language come alive.

For more information visit the event website or contact Paul Stevenson at pwstevenson@cox.net.  Online registration can be found here.
