Dear Computer Science Teachers,

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Joy Hofmeister is pleased to announce the initiation of the Computer Science Standards development process and is seeking input from knowledgeable and experienced Computer Science educators from the K-12 and Career Technology communities, faculty from Higher Education, business and industry representatives, and community stakeholders.

The landscape of Computer Science has greatly changed in the recent years. Computing is a fundamental part of daily life, commerce and just about every occupation in our modern economy. It is essential that students are exposed to the field of computer science in our K-12 system, as it is foundational in transforming the way a student thinks about the world. It not only teaches them about technology, it also teaches them how to think differently about any problem. Computer science puts students on the path toward some of the highest paying, fastest growing jobs in America.

The new Computer Science Standards Committee members will be responsible for conducting a thorough review of existing CS standards and research-based guidance to develop Oklahoma's first Computer Science Standards.

Selected applicants will be placed on one of two sub-committees:

  1. THE WRITING TEAM will meet three times in Oklahoma City during the fall semester and often virtually to conduct their review of high-quality standards and resources from other states and organizations and to complete the development of Oklahoma's CS Standards. Meetings will be held Sept. 28, Oct. 26, and Dec. 7.
Travel and substitute costs will be covered for K-12 teachers.
  2. THE DRAFT REVIEW TEAM will meet no less than twice virtually during the fall semester to conduct extensive and detailed reviews of the Oklahoma CS Standards during the development process. The first virtual meeting will be at 4 p.m. Oct. 27, followed by a review period during the first two weeks of November. December virtual meetings will be determined by the availability of the team members.

All Oklahomans interested in participating on the Writing or Draft Review Teams must complete the official survey no later than Sept. 13, 2017. Selections will be announced via email by Sept. 15, 2017.
