Seniors at Mustang, Tishomingo high schools selected as Oklahoma representatives to prestigious residential STEM camp
OKLAHOMA CITY (April 18, 2017) – State Superintendent of Public
Instruction Joy Hofmeister today announced that Ashleigh Hines of Tishomingo and Christine Hoang of Yukon will be Oklahoma delegates to the National Youth
Science Camp in West Virginia this summer. Both will attend the prestigious
residential program for high school seniors on full scholarship. Among the
camp’s presenters are scientists from academia, government service and the
corporate world.
The camp, which is operated by the
National Youth Science Foundation, offers participants more than three weeks of
immersive scientific study and research in the eastern mountains of West
Virginia. Delegates are selected for achievement in science fields and the
potential for thoughtful scientific leadership.
“We are thrilled to announce that Ashleigh
and Christine have been selected to participate in the National Youth Science
Camp,” said Hofmeister. “This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for high
school seniors with the highest aptitude in science, math, engineering and
technology. It offers comprehensive learning in STEM fields, which are in high
demand in the job market. We are so proud of Ashleigh and Christine and will be
cheering them on as they go through this amazing experience that is sure to
equip them with valuable knowledge, leadership skills and life-long
relationships.”
Hines, a senior at Tishomingo High School,
will study pre-med at Baylor University in Waco, Texas, next fall, with a
career goal to become a pediatrician. She will graduate in May with 37 credit hours earned as a concurrent student at
Murray State College in her hometown.
Hoang, a senior class officer who holds multiple leadership positions at Mustang High School, plans to study biology at the University of
Oklahoma in the fall and eventually attend medical school. She, too, will
specialize in pediatrics.
