Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling
(LETRS) is a comprehensive professional development curriculum that offers
high-quality support for literacy educators. More than any other professional development
curriculum, LETRS prepares
educators for the challenging work of teaching literacy.
 Beyond
the routines and lesson plans of adopted reading programs, it’s important that
educators understand the language structures they’re teaching, how students
learn to read and write and the reasons why some children fail to learn.
OSDE
is hosting several LETRS trainings this summer. Please note that you must
attend all days within each training to receive a certificate of completion. LETRS trainings honor RSA requirements
for teacher literacy professional development.

The purpose of the Oklahoma AP Incentive Program is to
improve the course offerings available to Oklahoma high school students through
Advanced Placement (AP) and to prepare students for admission to and success in
a postsecondary educational environment.
Among the components of this program, which are contingent
upon provision of appropriated funds, are:
- Financial assistance for training to public school teachers and schools in order to build and maintain successful AP programs or International Baccalaureate (IB) programs;
- Test fee assistance to public school students who are in financial need or who take more than one AP or IB exam in one year.
So, what does this look like for Oklahoma public school students and teachers this year?
- With subsidies from the state of Oklahoma and the College Board, students in financial need pay only $10 per AP exam.
- Students not in financial need but taking more than one exam in one year will receive a discount of $25, provided by the state of Oklahoma, for each exam taken.
- Oklahoma public school teachers may receive training at AP Summer Institutes at the University of Oklahoma or the University of Tulsa, tuition free and provided by the state of Oklahoma.

Summer is fast approaching! Together we can ensure that the children of Oklahoma get
the nutritious food they need this summer through the USDA’s Summer Food
Service Program (SFSP) or the Seamless Summer Option (SSO) through the National
School Lunch Program (NSLP).
Learning does not end when school is out for the
summer, and neither does the need for good nutrition. Nearly 18 million students
depend on free or reduced-price school lunches and breakfasts for nine months
out of the year. For many of these children, summer vacation brings an
increased risk of hunger and developmental decline. Summer food programs, with
support from the USDA, give your school an opportunity to improve a child’s
physical and social development while providing nutritious meals.
Children 18 years old and younger in
every Oklahoma county are eligible to receive free meals; however, several counties do not currently offer a summer feeding
program.
Our goal is to have at least
one summer feeding program in every county so children do not go hungry during
the summer months.
Help us reach all children in Oklahoma in need
of nutritious meals. By increasing the number of
schools participating as sponsors in the SFSP or SSO, we will reach our goal. Your support is vital. Consider sponsoring an SFSP site this summer!
The application deadline is April 30, 2017.
For more information, contact the Office of Child Nutrition at (405) 521-3327 regarding the Seamless Summer program
or Franza Schrader at (405) 522-4943 regarding the SFSP program.

OSDE is now accepting applications for the Oklahoma School Testing
Program (OSTP) standard-setting process for the newly aligned state assessments.
Standard setting is the process that allows Oklahoma educators to make expert
judgments about the content a student should master before he or she is
reported in a specific performance level (e.g., Advanced).
During this process, participants will analyze assessment content
and recommend cut scores for each performance level.
Please inform your district’s school counselors, administrators
and teachers of this opportunity to participate in the standard-setting
process.

Please take the time to fully review the data-related sections below.
The information SDE receives through these reports may affect your programs and
allocation amounts.
Due to the changes outlined in Senate Bill 1004, which went into
effect on July 1, 2016, districts are now only required to submit the Dropout
Report once a year. The fourth-quarter Dropout Report submitted in October 2016 will
be the only Dropout Report required until October 2017.
School districts may now begin uploading FY17 trial revenue and
expenditures to the Oklahoma Cost Accounting System (OCAS), located in Single Sign-On.
Schools can upload trial data until June 30. This is a great opportunity to
correct any coding errors.
If you have questions, contact the Office of Financial Accounting
at (405) 521-2517.
