As of Jan. 1, 2026, state law (SB 1066) requires all physicians to complete medical marijuana education and register with the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana Authority (OMMA) before providing medical marijuana recommendations to OMMA patients and applicants.
Referral Guidelines and Compliance
-
Avoid unregistered referrals: Do not direct patients to physicians who are not registered and fully approved by OMMA. A pending application is not sufficient. Recommendations from unregistered providers result in automatic application rejections.
-
Verify registration: Encourage patients to check the Registered Physicians List on our Physicians webpage. If a doctor is not on that list, patients must confirm registration directly with the physician, as some providers choose to remain registered but unlisted.
-
Transition rule: Recommendations issued on or before Dec. 31, 2025, are still considered valid for the full 30-day window. Any recommendation dated Jan. 1, 2026, or later must come from an approved, registered physician.
-
Physical location: It is illegal for a recommending physician to be located at the same physical address as a dispensary (including virtual appointments conducted within your facility).
Helping Your Customers
To ensure a smooth licensing process, remind patients that their physician must have received approval from OMMA before their appointment. Directing a patient to an unqualified or pending provider jeopardizes their ability to obtain a license.
