New Direction Weight Loss Pilot Program Introduced This Summer

The New Direction program offers something different from common weight loss programs. While it provides a motivational, encouraging and supportive atmosphere, the approach is science-based and mindful to overall aspects of health behavior that may attribute not only to our weight but also to overall well-being. The 12-week pilot program included a variety of topics covered by Thrive and health professionals.

State Agency Soccer League Busy with End of Season Games

The SASL has a good partnership with Oklahoma’s Energy FC, which allows use of their practice field for regular season soccer games. On Aug. 24, Energy FC gave state employees and their families a discounted price to attend their game, which was preceded by our own SASL All-Star game. The final season playoff games will be Saturday, Sept. 7 at the Energy FC practice fields at 2600 N.E. 63rd St. in Oklahoma City, just east of the OOKC-County Health Department. Games begin at 9 a.m. with the last game starting at  5 p.m. Food trucks will be there, so bring your lawn chairs and blankets and come out to watch your agency in the playoffs.

Softball Playoffs Scheduled for Sept. 4

Even though there were some warm summer evenings for the softball games, the state employees enjoyed fun and good competition. Come watch the playoff tournament  – games will start at 6:30 p.m on Wednesday, Sept. 4. The final game will be played at Eggeling Stadium at Wheeler Park, 1120 S. Western Ave., just off Interstate 40 in Oklahoma City. Nice bleachers are available for seating or you can bring your own. Find out when your team plays.

Basketball Crowns New Champions

It was an exciting game between the ODOT Road Warriors and Langston University LUnatics. Both teams entered the championship game with no losses. Updates to the league are planned for next year, so we hope to see you.

Top three individuals:

Health Tip

It’s almost autumn, and we are beginning to think about pumpkins for jack-o'-lanterns or pumpkin pies. Pumpkins are dense with vitamins A and C, and the seeds – known as pepitas – are rich in phytosterols, which may help lower cholesterol. When you are creating your jack-o'-lanterns, try saving the seeds and do a Google search on how to roast pepitas. You can snack on them or use them in salads.

Take Care of Yourself

Take Care of Yourself

When life gets busy and hectic, many people neglect their own health. Some view self-care as selfish, lazy or indulgent, but when you don’t take care of yourself, it can result in negative consequences. For example, you can become physically ill or emotionally burned out. Self-care is crucial for the mind, body and soul. Learn more about how important it is to take care of yourself in this month’s toolkit.
