Proposal for Accessory Dwellings set for public hearing
 The OKC City Council will hold a public hearing on May 6th, 2025, on a proposed ordinance to allow accessory dwellings (aka. “backyard dwellings”) within the core of Oklahoma City. The meeting begins that Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. at 200 N. Walker, 3rd Floor Council Chamber. The ordinance establishes regulations for how an accessory dwelling can be built in the areas of the City roughly between Interstate 35 on the east, Interstate 44/Northwest Expressway on the north and west, and SW 59th to the south. The area proposed for the backyard dwellings includes parcels in portions of Wards 2, 4, 6 and 7. that are within the City's core.
There are many ways that you can learn more about the ordinance and provide feedback:
- Determine if your address is included in the ordinance. If you are located in the Urban Medium or Urban High Land Use Typology Area of planokc, your property is included in the ordinance unless it is zoned historic. - Review the ordinance language and find past presentations and discussions here::Accessory Dwellings in OKC. Among other rules, the ordinance establishes height maximums, square footage maximums, access requirements, and stipulates that only one accessory dwelling is allowed per parcel.
- Email your City Council person with opinions about the ordinance in general and/or, your support or opposition to specific regulations being proposed. You can find contact information for Council members at https://www.okc.gov/government/city-council.
- Attend the Council meeting on May 6th to address the Council and join the conversation about the proposed regulations.
