Proposal for Accessory Dwellings moves to City Council
The OKC City Council will consider an ordinance that would allow accessory dwellings (aka. “backyard dwellings”) within the core of Oklahoma City on Feb. 25th. The meeting begins that Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. at 200 N. Walker, 3rd Floor Council chamber. The City Council agenda/order of meeting items and the ordinance language can be found beginning on Saturday Feb. 22 here: https://okc.primegov.com/public/portal
The ordinance establishes regulations for how an accessory dwelling can be built in the City’s core between Interstate 35 and Interstate 44 in portions of Wards 2, 4, 6 and 7. There are many ways that you can learn more about the ordinance and provide feedback:
- Review the ordinance language recommended by the Planning Commission on Nov. 14, 2024 to the City Council. The ordinance establishes height maximums, square footage maximums, access requirements, and stipulates that only one accessory dwelling to be lived in by one family is allowed per parcel.
- Join the Neighborhood Alliance on Monday evening Feb. 24th from 6 to 8 p.m. for a virtual presentation by the Planning Department to hear more about the proposal and ask questions. Go to https://nacok.org/events/nacok-calendar-of-events/ to register. Meeting attendance is limited to 100 participants but if registration is closed, the meeting will be recorded and posted shortly after the meeting on the nacog.org website for later viewing.
- Email codeupdate@okc.gov with comments and questions.
- Email your City Council person. You can find contact information for Council members at https://www.okc.gov/government/city-council. The ordinance will be introduced for consideration on Feb. 25th and scheduled for a final hearing on March 25th at 200 N Walker, 3rd Floor Council Chambers.
- Attend the Council meeting on Feb. 25th and March 25th to address the Council and join the conversation.
