Turn back clocks and outdoor water use this November

When you turn back your clocks this weekend for Daylight Savings, take a moment to turn down your outdoor water use, too! A late fall or winter lawn doesn't need as much water as a summer lawn. Warm-season grasses, like Bermudagrass, go dormant during the winter months and will bounce back with the spring rains.

Here are some tips to help reduce outdoor water use and protect your pipes during the cooler months:

Turn off automatic sprinkler programs. Only water manually during extended dry periods if necessary. Winterize sprinkler systems and cover outdoor spigots to avoid unnecessary leaks caused by frozen pipes. Periodically check for leaks and repair them quickly. Check both indoor and outdoor areas for leaks, especially after a stretch of freezing temperatures. Put a WaterSense®-labeled sprinkler controller or weather sensor on your holiday shopping list! Both options help you use less water throughout the entire year by maximizing efficiency and automatically adjusting schedules in response to current weather conditions.

Give a little. Help a lot. The Help 2 Others (H2O) financial assistance program provides annual funds to the Salvation Army to assist Oklahoma City Utilities customers who need help paying their utility bill. Donations are administered through the Salvation Army and 100% of the contributions are used to assist Oklahoma City Utilities customers. For assistance, call the Oklahoma Heartline at 211 or text 211OK to 898211. Customers wishing to help through the H2O program may round up their monthly Utilities bill to the nearest dollar or make a one-time donation. Just visit the 'Billing' section on okcutilities.com and click on the H2O Program tab on the left-hand side of the page. Contributions are tax deductible.
