Meet in the parking lot on the north side of Memorial Park; trash grabbers, gloves, bags, and safety vests will be provided. Please wear close-toed shoes.

The City of Oklahoma City is hosting an informational session about rain gardens and stormwater, followed by a cleanup around Memorial Park.

The City of Oklahoma City's Parks & Recreation Department was awarded a Community Challenge Grant from the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) to renovate two landscape beds in historic Memorial Park's surface parking lot into a rain garden.

What's a rain garden? Rain gardens capture storm water runoff; they slow down that runoff and clean it before it moves downstream through Oklahoma City's streams and waterbodies before it ends up in Arcadia Lake.

Join community volunteers and City staff to learn more about managing storm water runoff, how rain gardens function and the benefits rain gardens can provide, and a sweep of Memorial Park to round up any debris, litter, or garbage in preparation for the installation of rain gardens.

Where can I learn more about rain gardens?

Oklahoma State University has plenty of resources about rain gardens. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has plenty of information about rain gardens; there's information from the Oklahoma Dept. of Environmental Quality; or check out some of the rain gardens in and around Scissortail Park. You can even watch this 11-minute segment from Oklahoma Gardening about OSU landscape architecture students working with a homeowner's association to design a rain garden.

Where can I learn more about OKC Parks?

The City's OKC Parks website has tons of information including health, wellness & fitness programs; information on the more than 80 miles of recreational trails across OKC; boating, camping, and fishing on OKC's lakes; and much more.

Where can I learn more about storm water quality and runoff?

The City's Public Works Department has a division devoted to Storm Water Quality with many resources including webinars and workshops, programs like Adopt-A-City Street, or how to keep products out of our water bodies via the Household Hazardous Waste facility.
