From the Director - Nov 25 header

Dear Readers,

As the leaves begin to fall, I hope this newsletter finds you well and getting ready to gather with loved ones in the upcoming holiday season. This month’s newsletter highlights how Oklahoma libraries continue to grow, adapt, and support their communities in new and meaningful ways. From exploring creative programming ideas like tabletop gaming for teens to expanding healthcare access through telehealth booths, libraries are finding innovative ways to meet customers where they are.

Whether it's the unexpected closure of book vendors or other changes, our library community remains strong and connected. ODL is here to help navigate these transitions, share new funding opportunities, and celebrate the partnerships that make library work possible.

Thank you for all you do to keep Oklahoma’s libraries welcoming and essential to the communities they serve.

Happy learning,

  Natalie

Friends of Libraries Week may have ended in October, but the celebration is still going strong! United for Libraries and Friends of Libraries in Oklahoma (FOLIO) have both invited local Friends chapters to apply for awards honoring their support for libraries.

To recognize Friends of Libraries Week activities hosted by members, FOLIO is offering two $500 awards: one for communities with under 10,000 residents, and one for those with populations above 10,000. Entries close on November 15.

United for Libraries will be awarding two stellar Friends groups for their Friends of Libraries Week celebrations. Each winner will receive $250 after applications

are judged based on community engagement and creativity.

Agency Stories

Expanding Healthcare Access with Telehealth Booths at the Library

Accessing healthcare isn’t always easy, especially in rural areas or for those with communication barriers. Libraries across Oklahoma have been making sure that experts and their patients can connect remotely, expanding the reach of this vital system through telehealth booths.

The telehealth booth at Parker Memorial Library in Sulphur is already making a difference. Recently, a woman who is deaf was able to meet with her doctor in the private, secure booth, where a trusted friend translated the doctor’s instructions and questions into sign language.

She later shared, “I felt respected and understood. Having this option at the library gave me access to care I wouldn’t have had otherwise.”

Share Your Story with ODL

Sharing ODL customer stories highlights the tangible impact archives and libraries have on communities, showcasing how they foster literacy, provide access to information, and support lifelong learning.
