Night Tour of Fort Towson
Come to Fort Towson Historic Site on Saturday, June 7, from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m., when the staff will give a night-time guided summer tour of the grounds.
Fort Towson was established in 1824 to quell conflicts between lawless elements, American Indian peoples, and settlers claiming the area as part of Arkansas Territory. The fort also served as an outpost on the border between the United States and Texas, which was part of Mexico at that time. For more information, call 580-873-2634 or email fttowson@history.ok.gov. The Seminoles in Oklahoma
In the latest episode of A Very OK Podcast, Trait Thompson and Dr. Bob Blackburn discuss the origins of the Seminole Nation in Florida, how the Seminole Wars with the United States starting in 1817 led to their forcible removal to Indian Territory, and how the Civil War reduced the size of their reservation by over 1.7 million acres. They also delve into the impact of the discovery of the Greater Seminole Oilfield in 1923. Their guest is Jake Tiger, band chief of the Thomas Palmer Band and employee of the Seminole Nation's tribal preservation office.

OU Archaeological Field School at Spiro Mounds
From Monday, May 12, through Friday, June 13, the University of Oklahoma students and faculty will perform a month of excavations at Spiro Mounds Archaeological Center. Visitors are welcome to observe the research and ask questions while the group works. To protect the work of the archaeologists, visitors are asked to remain behind any barriers at all times.
The center is located three miles east of Spiro on Highway 9/271 and four miles north on Lock and Dam Road. For further information about the center, please call 918-962-2062.

Dutch Oven Gathering
The Fort Towson Historic Site will hold a Dutch Oven Gathering on Saturday, May 31, from 9 a.m. to noon. The event is FREE for participants and guests, and all are welcome to attend.
The talents of local cast iron chefs will be displayed at the Fort Towson Historic Site, with each person setting up their outdoor kitchen and preparing delicious treats. Musical guests Zoetrope Old Time and Celtic Music with Wayne and Brenda Cantwell will perform live on the day, and lemonade will be served at the Sutler’s Store.

Heritage Breed Poultry and Sheep Workshop
On Saturday, June 7, Hunter’s Home will hold a Heritage Breed Poultry and Sheep workshop that will teach guests how to care for heritage-breed turkeys and sheep.
Interested parties should register in advance for this class, which costs $10 per person. To register, please call 918-456-2751. Hunter’s Home is at 19479 E. Murrell Home Rd. in Park Hill. The site is open to the public from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Guided tours at the Oklahoma History Center Museum

The Oklahoma History Center Museum (OHCM) is now offering guided tours to the public on Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
These tours will be led by an OHCM volunteer docent and are included with the cost of admission. The tours are open to all guests, including groups. Patrons may request a tour as they enter the building or sign up in advance by contacting the OHCM admissions staff at 405-522-0765 or admissions@history.ok.gov.

Save the date for Saturday, June 14 when the Pawnee Bill Ranch and Museum celebrates Major Gordon W. “Pawnee Bill” Lillie, his wife May Lillie, and their famous Wild West Shows. Pawnee Bill’s Original Wild West Show is held at the original historic ranch site. Stagecoaches roll amid thundering horse hooves while the lightning of gunfire explodes around Pawnee Bill, May, and their cohorts as the talented performers thrill and amaze audiences. The theme for this year’s show will be “Pawnee Bill Honors Old Glory.”
