In early August 1917, hundreds of tenant farmers gathered at the farm of John Spears near Sasakwa, Oklahoma. These men opposed World War I and the draft, so they organized a rebellion against the U.S. government. Their plan was to march to Washington, D.C.—surviving on barbecued beef and roasted green corn during their journey. This became known as the Green Corn Rebellion, and it was the beginning of the end for the Socialist Party’s influence in Oklahoma.
