History Alive! on the Cherokee Strip returns in 2024

The living history program History Alive! on the Cherokee Strip started at the Cherokee Regional Heritage Center in Enid in the winter of 2019 and now takes place throughout the year on the first and third Saturday of each month from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Twice a month, the four historic buildings in the Humphrey Heritage Village, which are from the territorial days, come to life with reenactors dressed in period clothing from the late 1800s.

This family-friendly program gives visitors the opportunity to sit at school desks in the Turkey Creek one-room schoolhouse from 1896 while lessons are taught, hear a pioneer tale from those tending their shops, and watch as craftsmen and women work their trades. Visitors can go inside the 1905 Glidewell house or stop at the church from 1902. Guests can watch and participate in the different skills and trades of the time or file their own land claim at the historic 1893 US Land Office.

Volunteers are always needed. Please call the CSRHC at 580-237-1907 if you are interested in participating or have questions about the program.

The 1965 Oklahoma Supreme Court scandal

In 1964, Oklahoma Supreme Court Justice N. S. Corn was convicted on federal income tax evasion charges. While incarcerated, he provided testimony implicating himself, Justice Earl Welch, and Justice N. B. Johnson in a scheme to accept bribes in exchange for affecting the decision in cases before the court. The resulting scandal cast a shadow over the court and resulted in an impeachment trial in the state legislature. In this episode of A Very OK Podcast, Trait Thompson and Dr. Bob Blackburn explore the scandal and the environment that led up to its occurrence. Their guest is Jari Askins, Administrative Director of the Courts and Oklahoma Lieutenant Governor from 2006-2011.

Will Rogers Memorial Museum in Claremore will host a FREE Movie Night featuring the classic film Steamboat Round the Bend (1935) in its theater on Friday, January 26.

Admission to the movie is free, and guests can also enjoy free popcorn and drinks while watching the film, thanks to the Bank of Commerce’s sponsorship. Because seating is limited, the doors will open at 6 p.m. Please call 918-341-0719 for more information.
