Hand-colored engravings and lithographs exhibit at the Cherokee Strip Regional Heritage Center
On Saturday, January 28, the Cherokee Strip Regional Heritage Center (CSRHC) will open the traveling exhibit Imprinting the West: Manifest Destiny, Real and Imagined. The exhibit will be on display at the CSRHC from January 28 through March 16.
The works featured in Imprinting the West explore the potent imagery of the time that shaped how Native peoples and the West were understood. Westward expansion in the 19th century was closely intertwined with the Indian Removal Act of 1830, which forcibly removed Native populations in the east to areas west of the Mississippi River. The migration westward and settlement of white Americans only accelerated territorial tensions, which often culminated in bloodshed.
Imprinting the West features 48 hand-colored engravings and lithographs that explore the influence artists had on the perception of the West. This exhibit was curated by Dr. Randall Griffey, head curator at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, DC.

History of Gettysburg National Military Park presentation
On Saturday, January 28, from 1 to 2:30 p.m., Dr. Jennifer Murray, author and teaching associate professor at Oklahoma State University (OSU), will present “The History of Gettysburg National Military Park, 1863–2022” inside the visitor center at Honey Springs Battlefield. Murray is a military historian specializing in the American Civil War.
Murray’s program explores the landscape of the infamous battlefield as well as the first preservation and commemorative efforts of the Gettysburg Battlefield Memorial Association and the US War Department. Her main focus is the history of the Gettysburg battlefield in the 20th century, during the administrative era of the National Park Service (1933–present). As Murray describes it, “The history of the Gettysburg battlefield underscores the complicated relationship between race and reunion, public and private interests, between preservation theories and utilitarian uses, between the National Park Service and the American people, and between fact and fiction.”
For more information regarding the presentation and Honey Springs Battlefield, please contact honeysprings@history.ok.gov, adam.lynn@history.ok.gov, or 918-617-7125.
