April 2026
April is Stress Awareness Month. If you need to ease anxiety, start with a deep breathing exercise. Inhale slowly for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds, then exhale for 4 seconds. Repeat a few times. This can quickly calm your nervous system and lower your heart rate. Best of all, you can do it wherever you are, at home or in public.

That’s right! Saliva is a superhero for our bodies, acting as a defense system in the mouth. It helps to keep your mouth clean by washing away plaque and food particles. It can destroy bacteria on your teeth and prevent cavities. A decrease in saliva can quickly multiply bacteria and lead to increased cavities, gum disease and infection. Tell your dentist if you notice a chronic dry mouth. They can help identify the cause and prevent complications.
And please don’t forget to floss daily and brush your teeth at least twice a day. Brush for at least two minutes with a soft-bristle toothbrush.

If your child has pain after surgery or an injury, you want them to feel better fast. Often, ibuprofen (Advil®, Motrin®) or acetaminophen (Tylenol®) can help with pain. Sometimes they can be used together. Talk to your child’s doctor before starting any new medication.
- If the pain is still very strong and your child cannot sleep, eat or move well, the doctor may give an opioid pain medication for a short time. Use it only the way the doctor says. Keep it locked away. Even a small amount can hurt a child or teen if they find it.
- Call the doctor right away if your child is very sleepy or can’t wake up, has slow breathing, has blue lips or fingertips, or seems confused. Know the warning signs.
- Take leftover opioid medicine to a safe take-back site to dispose of it safely.
SoonerCare covers both opioid and non-opioid pain options for children. Questions? Call the Pharmacy Help Desk at 405-522-6205, option 4, or toll-free at 800-22-0114, option 4.
