Why are healthy dental habits so important? They help prevent tooth decay and gum disease and maintain your oral health.
Healthy diet A healthy diet leads to a healthier mouth. Eat less sweet and sticky foods. Eating more fruits and vegetables helps fight cavities.
Dental hygiene Ask your dentist to show you the best way to brush and floss. Do this at your regular checkup.
Dental check-ups SoonerCare pays for many dental services. This includes checkups, fluoride treatments (learn more below), X-rays and more. We recommend that a child have their first dental check-up no later than their first birthday.
Dental emergencies We all want our kids to be free of pain. That's why SoonerCare pays for emergency exams. We also pay to pull bad teeth when needed to stop pain or infection.

Early childhood tooth decay is the most common chronic childhood condition. Cavities and tooth decay in early childhood are five times more common than asthma. They are seven times more common than hay fever. Yet they are largely preventable. When used at least twice a year, fluoride varnish reduces dental decay by one-third. For more information, talk to your SoonerCare provider.

SoonerCare covers most shots or vaccines. These are also called immunizations. People need shots at different times for different reasons. Some shots make it less likely to get really sick from respiratory infections. Those infections usually happen more often in the fall and winter. They include RSV, flu and COVID.
SoonerCare members up to age 18 can get their shots from Vaccines for Children providers. Adult members can get their shots at pharmacies or health care clinics. Shots don’t count against your monthly prescription limit, and there is no copay for shots. Also, flu shots are free to anyone. They're available at most county health departments and community health centers.
Ask your provider about the benefits and possible side effects of RSV, flu and COVID shots. They can help you determine which shots are right for you.
Questions about pharmacy coverage of vaccines? Call the Pharmacy Help Desk at 405-522-6205, option 4, or toll-free at 800-522-0114, option 4.
