Viewing the Solar Eclipse

On April 8, a total solar eclipse will be seen across America including Oklahoma. A total eclipse happens when the moon passes between the sun and Earth and blocks the sun.

Safety is the number one priority when viewing a solar eclipse. It is NOT safe to look directly at the sun without special eye protection. Instead, use safe solar "eclipse glasses." These are NOT regular sunglasses.

Do NOT look at the sun through a camera lens, telescope, binoculars or other device while wearing eclipse glasses. The rays will burn through the filter and cause serious eye injury.

The Link Between Smoking and Colorectal Cancer

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. It's a time to shine a light on the connection between tobacco use and colorectal cancer. Tobacco products have cancer-causing chemicals that can damage bodies and lead to cancer. Secondhand smoke also carries a risk — not just to smokers but to everyone around them.

No matter how long you have used tobacco, quitting smoking reduces your cancer risk. It also improves your health.

SoonerCare supports you on your journey to quit. We cover counseling with your SoonerCare provider. We also offer all seven FDA-approved nicotine replacement therapies.

Take a step toward a healthier life. Encourage your friends and family to do the same by sharing the message. Visit the SoonerQuit, site and let’s fight against tobacco and colorectal cancer.

Have You Received a Member Survey?

OHCA is sending surveys to some SoonerCare members. We are working to make your member experience the best it can be. If you get a survey, use the provided link or phone number to take the survey. The survey is available in English and Spanish and takes just a few minutes to complete.

Diabetes Education and Support

If you have diabetes, SoonerCare is here to help! You can get free training called diabetes self-management education and support (DSMES). When you start DSMES, you get 10 hours of free training during your first year. After that, you can get two hours each year. Some of the training is one-on-one, and some is in groups.

During the training, you will learn how to better manage your diabetes, get more active and eat better. After DSMES training, most people live healthier. They have less hospital visits and a lower risk of kidney, nerve and eye damage.

To get started, ask your provider to contact a covered DSMES program. It is also a good idea to ask your provider about getting a 90-day supply of your maintenance drugs for diabetes. You might also be eligible for a continuous glucose monitor.

SoonerCare has many tools to help you live better with diabetes. If you want to learn more about DSMES, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is a great place to start.
