School starts just as late-summer fishing reaches its peak. There's no better way to close out the summer than a quick, close to home, fishing adventure.
Premier lakes around Oklahoma are starting to heat up for catfish and many other species. Be sure to get out and test your luck. Among Oklahoma's great lakes, we also have many fishing ponds which are a part of our Close to Home Fishing Program. Fishing in the early morning and late evening can be very productive.
Why now?
- Fish like bass, catfish and bluegill are still biting
- Even a short trip close to home can be a blast
- A perfect stress-free way to connect with your kids or friends

Night fishing can be one of the most exciting ways to fish. This is also a great way to beat the heat. Oklahoma reservoirs are great at producing action after dark. Walleye are low-light predators meaning they feed more actively at night and move to shallower water to feed.
Night fishing offers several advantages:
- Cooler temperatures
- Reduced traffic
- Less pressure
Be sure to try your luck at lakes like Hefner, Canton, Fort Cobb or Kaw Lake.
Some of the top baits for walleye:
- Jerk baits
- Lipped crankbaits
- Swimbaits

This month's episode of "Reel Talk Real Tips" podcast is going to be a good one! We are going over one of the best fishing locations in the state. Ethan Lovelace is a Wildlife Department fisheries biologist stationed at Blue River Public Fishing & Hunting Area. Fishing opportunities abound at Blue River. Many species found here year-round are smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, spotted bass, channel catfish, and many sunfish species. From November through mid-March, Blue River is a designated trout area and is stocked with rainbow trout approximately every two weeks during this time. This episode will drop on YouTube Aug. 20 at noon. Check out our other videos on YouTube @okwildlifedept.
