Great day on the water / submitted by the Boone Boys / The Dock
White bass fishing is hot all across the state right now. Once the spring rains begin, the white bass will start moving up into river and creek systems to spawn. White bass are being caught pretty heavily already at Lake Overholser. If fishing here, be sure to buy your city and state fishing license.
The best tip for catching temperate bass, such as white bass, that rely so heavily on shad as forage is finding the right size lure. It doesn't matter the type of lure as long as it mimics a shad. More often than not white bass are munching on 1-2" shad, even the bigger fish. Starting off as small as you feel comfortable throwing will put you on more fish more often. It's easy to size up when you're already catching fish, but you can lose confidence quickly when you're not getting bites and you may have the right lure on, but a little too big.
Fishing at a Close to Home pond / Edwards Park Pond
The Close to Home Fishing Program includes 46 ponds and small lakes open to the public statewide, offering quality fishing opportunities to anglers of all skill levels. Agreements with multiple municipalities around Oklahoma make all of this possible. Each pond is intensely managed and receives extra attention when it comes to fish stocking, harvest, special events, angler access, and water quality.
The best way to fish these locations will vary by where they are in the state. The most guaranteed method of success at each of these locations is going to be a bobber, split-shot, hook, and worm.
Be sure to check out our outdoor calendar. This summer ODWC will be hosting many fishing clinics for people of all ages. These clinics will be held every Monday afternoon beginning in May. The calendar will provide you will all of the information to register and attend.
