The Outdoors are Always Open Fall is for Fishing
"Summer has a way of draining the fast-paced excitement of spring fishing from the most avid of anglers, giving the illusion of 'poor-fishing' until the next calendar year. But nothing could be further from the truth." - Skylar St. Yves, ODWC R3 Fishing Coordinator
There you have it. Fall is upon us, and fall means fishing. See more of what St. Yves is saying about fishing this time of year in his latest blog post on the Wildlife Department's Outdoor Oklahoma Journal. Get additional tips on our Fishing Resources webpage, where you can get the information you need for all things fishing whether you're a novice, intermediate or advanced angler. Also, be sure to scroll down for great tips or to sign up for one of the Wildlife Department's free virtual fishing clinics this fall. And if you're just coming into the action, make sure you get your fishing license! Whatever you do, remember that the outdoors are always open. Don't miss out!

Family Close to Home Fishing for the Holiday Win
The holiday weekend is here, and urban ponds in communities across Oklahoma are stocked with ready-to-catch hybrid sunfish. If you're looking for a way to do some quality social distancing this weekend with the people close to you, check out one of these urban ponds. Part of the Wildlife Department's Close to Home Fishing Program, many of these waters are located at city parks with other amenities like playgrounds, walking trails, and picnic tables! And since Close to Home waters are just a short drive away, you don't have to make a whole day of it. But we wouldn't blame you if you did! See additional tips in this video clip, or sign up for a free family fishing clinic Sept. 8 at a CTHF pond in Oklahoma City.
Hit the Oklahoma Fishing Trail for Adventure
If big water is your thing, check out the state's many lakes on the Oklahoma Fishing Trail, designed to highlight the best of Oklahoma fishing. The Trail is organized into six loops, covering the entire state. Each loop is organized by lake and species, so no matter your fishing ambitions, you'll find a loop that's perfect for you. The Oklahoma Fishing Trail is a collaborative effort of the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation and the Oklahoma Tourism & Recreation Department.

Learn Fishing Basics with the Whole Family
The Wildlife Department is offering both virtual and in-person learning opportunities throughout the fall, starting with a virtual Oklahoma Aquatic Education instructor certification course Sept. 8. Certified volunteers are able to teach family fishing clinics statewide and have access to fishing equipment, fish stockings and literature. Also happening Sept. 8 is a family fishing clinic at South Lakes Park in Oklahoma City, where participants will learn about fishing and try it first-hand with expert instruction. Later in the month, reserve your spot in one of several virtual "Ask an Angler" clinics on topics like streams, fall fishing, trout and wintertime catfish angling. To check out and sign up for upcoming courses, click below and select "Fishing" from the Event Type drop-down menu; then "Search Events."

Researchers Tag Striped Bass with $100 Rewards
Through a grant funded by the Sport Fish Restoration Program, Oklahoma State University researchers placed reward tags on nearly 500 striped bass this summer in the Arkansas River, lower Illinois River (below Tenkiller Dam) and lower Canadian River (below Eufaula dam). These tags will help researchers collect several important types of fisheries data, and anglers who catch one could score $100.

To help you stay healthy, we urge you to follow the same social distancing practices in the woods and on the water as you would in other settings.
We manage and protect fish and wildlife, along with their habitats, while also growing our community of hunters and anglers, partnering with those who love the outdoors, and fostering stewardship with those who care for the land.
