WINTER WEATHER: Highway Conditions Alert 12-30-20 as of 4 p.m.

(Editors and News Directors - As a reminder, please note the updated official Oklahoma Department of Transportation logo below for your use. We have included a vertical and horizontal view, and appreciate your help in using this version for graphics about our agency in your coverage.)

Precipitation – mostly rain with some pockets of light snow and sleet – continues to fall across portions of central, eastern and northeastern Oklahoma late this afternoon. Highways remain in good condition, but drivers are urged to pay close attention to weather forecasts as conditions could rapidly change, especially as temperatures drop in the evening hours. As this occurs, bridges and elevated surfaces can quickly develop slick spots.

Oklahoma Department of Transportation crews report wet and slushy roadways in Lincoln, Seminole, Pottawatomie and Okfuskee Counties in central Oklahoma, including along the I-40 corridor. Sleet and slushy conditions are also being reported in Pittsburg County. Salt, sand and plowing operations are underway in these areas.

Crews in other areas of the state remain on standby and are closely monitoring conditions as the storm moves through. Falling temperatures could cause icy conditions to quickly develop, and drivers should plan ahead and evaluate their travel plans.

Download the free Drive Oklahoma smart phone app or visit www.okroads.org for a map of statewide current closures and snow plow cameras and www.oktraffic.org to view traffic conditions in the Oklahoma City and Tulsa metro areas before traveling.

NOTE: This office will provide an update as conditions change.

REMEMBER during snowy and icy conditions, motorists are asked to:

  • Stay about 200 feet behind road clearing equipment; crews need room to maneuver and can engage plowing or spreading materials without notice.
  • Allow extra space between vehicles to provide adequate distance for braking.
  • Be aware of "black ice," which looks wet on the roadway but is a thin layer of ice.
  • Be patient, plan trips ahead and allow extra time in reaching destinations.
