WINTER WEATHER: Highway Conditions Alert 12-30-20 as of 1 p.m.

A wintry mix is reported in portions of central and north-eastern Oklahoma this afternoon. While highways are in good condition at the moment, drivers are urged to pay close attention to weather forecasts as conditions could rapidly change.

Oklahoma Department of Transportation crews report wet and slushy roads in Cleveland, Pottawatomie and Okfuskee Counties in central Oklahoma, including along the I-40 corridor, and extending to the northeast including the Tulsa metro. Salt, sand and plowing operations are underway in these areas. Crews are on standby and closely monitoring in other areas of the state as the storm moves through. Falling temperatures could cause icy conditions to quickly develop, and drivers should plan ahead and evaluate their travel plans.

View www.okroads.org for a map of statewide current closures and snow plow cameras and www.oktraffic.org to view conditions in the Oklahoma City and Tulsa metros before traveling.

NOTE: This office will provide an update as conditions change.

REMEMBER during snowy and icy conditions, motorists are asked to:

  • Stay about 200 feet behind road clearing equipment; crews need room to maneuver and can engage plowing or spreading materials without notice.
  • Allow extra space between vehicles to provide adequate distance for braking.
  • Be aware of "black ice," which looks wet on the roadway but is a thin layer of ice.
  • Be patient, plan trips ahead and allow extra time in reaching destinations.
