As with many industries during the last year, our agency has struggled with recruitment and retention of employees, and more specifically, correctional officers. As promised, we have been working diligently to increase and maintain appropriate staffing levels.
We have continued our efforts to stand up the Recruitment and Retention unit to focus on bringing more people into the Oklahoma Department of Corrections (ODOC) family. We have also worked with legislators to determine how to best utilize the 8 million dollars appropriated to ODOC to improve our correctional officer-to-inmate ratio. In the near future, we will be implementing a pay differential for correctional officers employed at facilities that fall below staffing thresholds and implementing correctional officer sign-on bonuses. More details regarding these incentives will be provided in the coming days.
I am optimistic that these initiatives along with your continued commitment will help increase job satisfaction as well as recruitment and retention efforts. Thank you for all you do to protect the public, each other, and those in our care. As always, it is an honor to serve as your director, and I’m proud to lead this agency every single day.
