Dan! Good BBQ Sauce
I’ve been making BBQ sauce for 25 to 30 years ago. I started making DAN! Good BBQ Sauce about 20 years ago. I gave it away to family and friends. Then, my wife (Renee) and I got the idea that it might sell pretty good, so we made a business.
My biggest struggles have been at the startup of the business. Having to find out what all is needed to start a business. Such as Tax Numbers, Health Dept. licenses. Dealing with companies that have a direct effect on your business. But, with time and a little patience, it all works out.
My successes have been the outcome of the company so far. It’s holding its own. And just recently, I entered my Mild, and Hot sauces in the American Royal BBQ Sauce Contest held every year in Kansas City. The Mild sauce finished 48th out of 151 entries, the Hot sauce finished 21st out of 84 entries.
What brought Dan Good to the Rose District Farmers market? It was one of my first choices as to where to sell DAN! Good BBQ Sauce. I had heard of the Broken Arrow Rose District Farmers Market and how good and well run it is. It was no disappointment! And I want to say again about the people involved. From management to vendors to customers. We have met and work with some really quality people.
Dan Good is at the Rose District Farmers’ Market every Saturday, located on the West side of the interactive water feature. This genuine and sweet couple are always there with a smile and ready to give out samples of their amazing BBQ sauce, so come on by and give them a try!

Garden Farm
At the edge of Broken Arrow, just before Coweta is a small yet thriving plot of land known as Garden Farm LLC. Purchased four years ago from their good friend Bill Engelhardt, Cindy & Gary Shotton have 4 ½ acres with 2 acres being worked, within the past two years. Cindy & Gary are happy to have a small portion of the 2 working acres offered out and worked by other farmers who don’t have the space otherwise, they do not rent it out as they are very much into promoting others being able to garden or farm. When asked what brought them to farming, they let me know that they were both raised on farms in Colorado, so it comes natural to them as it is in their blood! Even with a farming background they have had their fair share of struggles, “It definitely started as a hobby & it’s a pretty tight margin business-wise, but the biggest struggle is making a margin in a business-sense,” there are varmints that want to eat their produce as well as bugs! They have employed a few effective methods to combat the issues they face. They start everything from seed in either their grow house or personal home in the sunroom until their plants are “teenagers” for better chance of survival once planted. They were also able to get a hoop house, with drip irrigation throughout, with the assistance of the department of agriculture where they can move excess of plant-starts early in season to protect them until they are ready for ground. For the bugs they utilize diatomaceous earth, Irish spring soap shavings & cedar oil so they do not have to spray with any pesticides & companion plant where they are able.
Changing their garden farm from hobby to providing produce started in a couple of different ways. Gary and Cindy previously owned a manufacturing company, Auto-Turn Manufacturing, Inc, and this was sold in March of 2022. Gary and Cindy have a big heart to help people in countries not as prosperous as the US through their non-profit, www.InspiringBetterBusiness.com where they use Biblically based teachings to helping start-up businesses grow for people to become self-sufficient finically. Gary has been blessed to travel to at least 35 countries over the last 30 years. This includes multiple trips Africa, Eastern Europe, Asia, China, Mexico, and other Latin countries to travel and teach on developing a business and make it thrive and recently co-authored a book/curriculum titled, “God’s Laws for Business”.
A common quote to describe these efforts is “Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.”
The second thing that motivated Gary and Cindy to grow food for sale to the public is their connection with Bill Engelhardt. The land was purchased by the Shotton’s from Bill, but Bill remains very involved with the land and with Garden Farm day-to-day activities! According to Bill “it was work then & it’s work now,” as he described to me starting when he was a part of the team that originally laid the groundwork for the existing Broken Arrow Farmer’s Market having our very own market under the charge of Woodard then David Bleu in 2008. When the pavilion was first built in 2014 Bill stated that he and his wife had a booth at the first market located under the main pavilion and he & his wife had first pick of vendor spaces. They started out where Mac is now with lots of produce from the very land now owned by the Shotton’s!
Gary & Cindy both agree that they love being a part of the Rose District Farmers’ Market, from interacting with the people to being embraced by the community! Garden Farm can be found at the Rose District Farmers' Market every Saturday under the large pavilion on the West side, you will always see Cindy, Gary & Bill at the booth and occasionally the Shotton’s grandchildren as well, keeping with our vendors tradition of making the market into a family affair!
