Every second Saturday of the month, we will be offering a different free activity for the kids; from coloring pages, seed planting, to creating their own bird feeders!
OH SNAP! Before we forget, our supplemental nutrition programs are expanding! We will now be offering DOUBLE UP OKLAHOMA (AKA DUO) this year! This program provides EBT recipients up to $20 a day to spend on fresh fruits and vegetables!
Our Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program is now accepting applications! This program provides qualifying seniors with a $50 card to spend on fresh fruits and vegetables! SCHMITT LIVESTOCK
Meet Dani & Kyle Schmitt; Both started off with farming in their lives at young ages, Dani grew up on her family farm in Dewey & Kyle really got his first taste of ranching at 11 years old when a neighbor went from seven to 300 cattle in 6 years. Now this incredibly wholesome & down to earth family have their own place in the countryside of Ramona Oklahoma, on a thriving 100-acre ranch!
They have been on their current ranch since 2020 & Dani let us know that in the process of purchasing the land “from January 2020 to closing in August 2020, growth had happened & we’d already outgrown the space when we moved in!” To help with their spatial struggles they do lease an additional 50 acres & as far as furthering their growth in business & land they “find creative ways to grow that maintains enough income to be able to continue that growth.” “A lot of things are in the works that are contingent on leasing &/or purchasing land.” Schmitt Livestock originally started with hogs, show pigs to butcher, then went to heifers they bread that when came up not bred, so were sent to butcher & then were able to sell 9 heifers in 7 days and made changes for the better. “This year we are on schedule to do 100 beef & 150 hogs & 2500 chickens” Dani shared and added “from birth to butcher is a year on beef (or more if you count gestation) so finding more land need is the hardest part, we get the butcher dates a year out & try to keep up with markets!” If you have been at their booth, you may have also noticed that Schmitt livestock sells Chicken, eggs, Goat & coffee. They have laying hens as well as meat birds on their property and being that they are in open countryside with many predators (coyotes, snakes & hawks to name a few), they have found a way to overcome that obstacle with chicken tractors. Large movable coops to protect the yard birds when the Schmitt’s aren’t there to. The chicken tractor offers a roof for shade and welded wire to keep out predators but is on wheels with an open bottom so the chicken can literally be protected when out to pasture! The chickens get access to fresh grass & soil, therefore, bugs & in return the top layer of soil is loosened and fertilized! Also being able to offer the birds a way to have pasture, while in the shade, ensures that on our blistering-hot, Oklahoma days, the birds aren’t just hanging out in a coop to stay cool! The goats are raised on Dani’s sisters’ land, keeping all the meat raising in the family!
With their success in ranching, Schmitt Livestock was conceptualized and appeared for the first time in Farmers’ Markets in Owasso & Skiatook in 2017. They took a break from markets in 2020 to move and transition their business to their new space. In 2021 they were able to come back to the Skiatook & Owasso markets & in fall of 2022 they joined the Rose District Farmers Market family where they quickly became one of our staple vendors & were taken into the fold of the market family. Keeping up with markets can be a lot but they are happy to do it. They start at Noon on Friday doing inventory & stocking for both the Rose District Saturday market that Dani works & Glenpool where Kyle is, as well as inventory & stocking for employees that work the Owasso Saturday market for them. They join forces in the evening for the Skiatook market. Saturday market days are of course mostly taken up by the market & of course they are also a part of our Tuesday evening market!
A note from Dani: “I want to take a moment to introduce our family!
If you are reaching out for meat, live animals, farm tours, to come shop, or coming to the Owasso Farmer and Artisan Market or the Rose District Farmers Market, you will talk to or see me (Daniell). There are lot of other faces behind the scenes that you may not see!
Kyle, my husband is the planner, organizer, cattleman, welder, fence builder, fix it man and mastermind behind feeding, growing and finishing out all of our animals. He is always formulating to keep prices right and quality at its peak. In everything he does, he strives for excellence and that’s why we are always growing and evolving in this wonderful world of AG! I’m so thankful to have him by my side, and while he’s not the face you see, his hands, sweat, blood and tears are behind every bite!
Our 3 amazing kids, Daxon, Uriah, and Arlis. You may have caught a glimpse of them running around the farmers markets or on our farm, they are always on the go! They are our future and while they may not fully grasp the whole concept of what we are doing now, they are in this with us full tilt. They are all hands on deck day in and day out, whether that’s feeding, haying, filling up water tanks, or loading animals to take to the butcher, and making deliveries, they are there! What I love most is that God is speaking to us through our kids with new ideas, visions and ways to improve, it’s truly incredible!
God put a vision in our hearts when we were first married and while we may not have known exactly how it would pan out, we were excited. That excitement and passion hasn’t stopped and our vision has just grown bigger!!
THANK YOU to everyone that has come on this journey with us, supported our product and continues to invest in what we are doing. Doing what you love and getting to share that with so many people day in and day out is truly a dream come true!!”
Come check them out at the Rose District Farmers Market every Tuesday and Saturday under the pavilion!
