New Leaf Farms/Okie Doggie
In the heart of Tulsa, a backyard farm and family of 5, grow & thrive a variety of plants & create the best gourmet dog treats around. You know them as Kristin & Aaron with New Leaf Farms/Okie Doggie & their 3 furr babies, Sam(the Cat) & James & Pepper, their puppers, which give inspiration for the Okie Doggie portion of the business. Kristi started with the Rose District Farmers Market in 2022 with her variety of fun and funky, Oklahoma grown plant starts, such as Kajari, Tiger, Lemon drop & Petit Grid de Rennes Melons, Jing Orange & Okinawa Pink Okras, Black Futsu, Red Kuri & Spaghetti Squash, Flat white boar & Blue Jherrald Pumpkins, Dark Purple Opal Basil, Mexican Sour Gherkin Cucamelon, Lavender Frog-Egg Eggplant & the list goes on & on. She does have many plants of the more “known” varieties as well, such as herbs, tomatoes, basil, etc. Though not Organically certified, Kristi follows organic practices for all her plant babies, both for her household & to be rehomed at the market. Kristi starts all her plant babies, from seed in their spare room/office which is lined with lit shelving that end up filled top to bottom/side to side before they are hardened outside and taken to the market.
In late summer of 2022 Kristi introduced her “Okie Doggie” line to market with a wonderful response of wagging tails and happy feet from all 4-legged friends that go by her booth to sample the treats and get their skin parents to purchase them some treats or pupsicles. Kristi sums up her Okie Doggie story with “Okie Doggie Gourmet Treats & Wellness was born out of Passion & Love…Love for out Furry Family Members & a Passion to create products to help them live lone & healthy lives. What started as a Women Owned, Family Run, All-Natural Micro Farm in Tulsa Known as New Leaf Farms quickly grew a tail, & Okie Doggie was born. While things on the Farm continue to grow & flourish outside, in the kitchen our master baker is hard at work, developing & delivering treats & wellness products your pets are sure to love. All of our products are small batch, all natural, using whole ingredients without any harmful biproducts. Each product starts with the purest ingredient know to man, Love. We pride ourselves in offering wholesome high-quality foods for our furry friends, going above and beyond the regular pet food ‘standards’.”
The success of the businesses has allowed Kristi to change her full-time job from a 9-5 to her own home business which she states is a lot more work but very worthwhile, exhausting, fulfilling & makes a difference for the communities she services & you can feel the love & passion put into each entrepreneurial growth. Kristi is at the Rose District Farmers market every Tuesday and Saturday stocked with plants (when in season) & the Okie Doggie Gourmet Treat & Wellness line(year round) & is always full of information for any questions you may have for her products, so she would be happy to have you & your furr babies, come by and check her booth out!
   Vendor Spotlight
Farm/Business Visit
Ro-mac Farms
Mac McDaris, owner of Ro-Mac Farms has been one of Broken Arrow’s favorite, and most seasoned, vendors since the farmers market began, 19 years ago. Mac used to teach Agriculture for 1 year in Little Kansas and another 2 years in Broken Arrow before spending the next 30 years at the CO-OP in both Broken Arrow & Coweta. He was even awarded Outstanding Teacher in the spring of 1966 by Oklahoma State University.
Romac Farms is located right here in Broken Arrow on a beautiful 11.5 acres of land. Mac and his wife Jaime have been living there for the last 47 years. He proudly cultivates everything completely by himself and mostly by hand. He grows nearly every crop you can in the climate zone, but of everything he grows he says he is the best at growing weeds. The only thing on the property that he does not personally manage are the beehives. Mac's friend manages the hives and the honey for Mac to sell at the market. This partnership allows a mutual benefit – the bees pollinate Mac’s crops and Mac’s crops feed the bees!
Visiting Mac's farm turned into an educational experience as he shared with me past issues such as, hungry critters such as deer, raccoons, gophers, rabbits, squirrels, and turtles have been taking all they can get. Last year he lost a majority of his crops due to those critters. However, if it isn't the critters, it’s often a lack of rain that is killing off many acres of crops, or extreme heat as we also saw last year.
This year’s farm visit really showed the love Mac has put into his farm as he is preparing to have a total of over 1000 tomato plants, 12,000 onion plants, 150 feet of cabbage, 100 feet of cauliflower, and the list goes on to include, sweet peppers, banana peppers, hot peppers, broccoli, spinach, radishes, turnips, kale, potatoes, red beets, zucchini, cucumbers, squash, okra, and more. Did I mention that he plants each one by hand and by himself? However, out of 11.5 acres of land, Mac says he is best as raising cane.
Mac continues to show his love for agriculture, teaching, and sense of community each week at the Rose District Farmers Market. Even when he does not have much to offer, he still wakes up early to be set-up before 5 AM and talk amongst the other vendors in anticipation for another market day. Mac stated that his favorite thing about the market is the people. "You know, I don't do this for the money. I don't care about money. I just love meeting new people and seeing the same people from the co-op that I've been seeing for years."
Above all, Mac truly loves his community and encourages people to come talk to him about his work, the farm, or even the good ol' co-op days!
