MHC recognizes veterans facing ‘War at Home’
Staff Sgt. Michael K. Coon is now a permanent part of Broken Arrow history, with his 10-foot by 4-foot silhouette statue installed on the grounds of the Military History Center, 112 N. Main St.
Coon served 10 years in the U.S. Army 1st Battalion, 77th Armor Regiment in Iraq and Afghanistan in the Persian Gulf before succumbing to the "War at Home" by suicide in 2015, a result of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). He's not alone. An average of 20 American veterans a day each die by suicide.
Coon's Native American family has a storied history of military service. Phillip Coon, Michael's grandfather, was a World War II prisoner of war and a Bataan Death March Survivor. His father, Michael Dennis Coon, served in Vietnam as an airborne paratrooper.
Now, it's the elder Michael Coon's mission to bring awareness to the plight of veterans who have PTSD.
"My son decided that he wanted to join the military and to continue my father's legacy," Coon said. "Today, they're both gone, and I'm the last one. My mission in life now is to fulfill their honor, their respect, and their devotion that they showed to our country and to be sure that they are never forgotten."
Broken Arrow Mayor Debra Wimpee serves on the board of the Military History Center and has been instrumental in bringing the Mission 22 War at Home Memorial to Broken Arrow so more people would be aware of veterans suffering from PTSD.
The City has partnered with Mission 22 and the Muskogee Nation to bring a permanent memorial to Broken Arrow at Veteran's Park, 1111 S. Main St.
Mission 22, The War at Home Memorial, is dedicated to raising awareness of Veteran suicide. The project will be a national monument for those who have fallen in the war against veteran suicide.
Each steel plate silhouette is created in the likeness of a real American Veteran who lost their battle with post traumatic stress. These 20 men and women featured in the memorial represent those suffering from the fight here at home every day.
"We are honored that Mr. Coon decided to donate his son's silhouette to the Military History Center so that it would be part of our history in Broken Arrow along with the War at Home Memorial," Wimpee said. "It's been an honor to work with Mr. Coon the last two years in getting this monument here."

Franchise agreements explained
The City has received numerous calls and emails in the past and comments on social media regarding the quality of internet service and/or cable providers in the City. Many of these comments concern Cox Communications’ agreement with City.
Cox has a non-exclusive cable franchise agreement with the City. The important part of that phrase is non-exclusive. This means that the City reserves the right to enter a similar agreement with any competing cable company.
Franchise agreements allow private telecommunications and utility entities the use of our public rights of way to install, maintain, and upgrade their own infrastructure to support the services they offer. In exchange, the City receives a franchise fee. Additionally, these companies can gain access to the City’s rights of way through a permitting process. Windstream Communications operates by this permitting process. At this time, Cox and Windstream are the only telecom companies to make these infrastructure investments within the City of Broken Arrow.
In the case of Cox, the franchise agreement requires they provide an annual report of their services to the City Council each May. That presentation will be made at the May 18 City Council meeting and will be posted on the City’s YouTube Channel.
Private telecom and ISP companies make their own business decisions regarding when and where to invest resources to provide services to an area. The City Council and Administration welcome any new investments that will increase options and improve service to residents.
Residents wishing for certain companies to expand their services into Broken Arrow are encouraged to contact those companies directly. If they see enough demand, it can help make the case to their decision makers that Broken Arrow is worth the investment!
