Monthly Focus newsletter moving to digital
Thank you for signing up!
The November 2020 issue of the Focus newsletter will be the final printed edition distributed with your monthly utility bill. However, from time to time we may provide news or updates on various City operations and activities.
In addition to the implementation of residential curbside recycling service starting in October, City news publications will also become more sustainable with a shift to email-based monthly newsletters.
The Focus newsletter has been printed and mailed with utility bills for many years. However, in today’s data-driven society, measuring the effectiveness of printed news is difficult at best. Starting this fall, residents can start directly receiving the Focus newsletter by email through a new service launched Sept. 1.
This new service will give the City more ways to engage with residents and other interested patrons on the topics that are important to them. Ceasing paper newsletters will help the City toward one of its goals — to become more sustainable.
Subscribers will be able to receive news in multiple categories that they care about, including construction projects, events, meeting agendas and much more. To sign up for Focus, as well as many other topics, visit BrokenArrowOK.gov/SignUp.
The past issues of the monthly Focus will always be available online at BrokenArrowOK.gov/Focus as well.
We realize some residents do not have an email account or a computer to read this newsletters online. In these cases, printed copies will be made available. Please contact Utility Customer Service at 918-259-8409 for information.
FAQs regarding your new trash service
Broken Arrow’s new residential trash service begins in October. Visit RecycleBA.com for more information.
In general, each residential trash customer received two 96-gallon carts, one blue for recyclables and one black for all other trash. While service has been reduced to once-per-week, when families fully utilize the recycling service, the amount of trash produced in a week is drastically reduced.
When will my new pickup day be announced?
Pickup days are included in the information pack that you will find inside your cart.
How do holidays affect my pickup day?
If a holiday falls on a Monday, service will begin on Tuesday and each day will slide forward. For example, Monday routes will be collected on Tuesday, Tuesday routes on Wednesday, etc.
What can be recycled?
We encourage residents to focus on items in the kitchen, laundry and bath.
Recycle:
- Rigid plastics, such as shampoo/conditioner bottles, food containers, laundry soap jugs, etc.,
- Paper, newspaper, cardboard, magazines, beverage cartons, and cereal boxes,
- Glass jars and bottles,
- Aluminum and steel cans.
We cannot accept:
- Styrofoam
- Plastic bags,
- Trash bags,
- Soiled items like diapers,
- ‘Tanglers’ that will clog the sorting machine such as hoses or chains,
- Clothing or linens.

Impact series presents development updates
At the Aug. 18 Broken Arrow Economic Development Authority (BAEDA) meeting, the City’s Economic Development Manager Norman Stephens made his second monthly Economic Development Impact presentation to the Authority. BAEDA is comprised of the five City Councilmembers and oversees how the City spends certain funds related to economic development within the City.
The purpose of the monthly presentations is to update the Authority, and the public, about ongoing economic development projects. Stephens also addressed common misconceptions about how the process works.
In August, Stephens addressed the projects in the Rose District, south Broken Arrow and two common social media misconceptions about economic development in the City.
The Brio, formerly known as the Milestone project, is a 4 story mixed use development with 30,000 square feet of commercial available on the ground floor and apartments on the other floors. Residents began moving into those apartments on Aug. 1. In the commercial space, two restaurants are planned to open before the end of the year.
The Center for Creative Arts, Innovation and Creativity will occupy the space where the former AVB Bank building was demolished this summer at Main and Dallas. The Center will provide a venue for a variety of art mediums. Construction on the new building should begin early this winter.
SoundMind Behavior Health Hospital started site work on the land near Aspen and the Creek Turnpike . The facility will be 72 bed speciality geriatric psychiatric hospital and should open in late 2022.
Nearby on Tucson just west of Elm, Russo’s Italian Kitchen is set to open by the end of this year. That building also has space available for a second restaurant.
Business Retention & Development Coordinator Steve Yoder presented an update on efforts the Economic Development team has taken to promote the New Orleans Square area, including a new Facebook page, Did You Know? videos with businesses and building relationships with business owners.
The monthly video presentations are available on the City’s website, YouTube channel, and social media platforms.

City staff members complete career milestones
Two members of the City of Broken Arrow staff recently completed major milestones in their careers.
The City would like to congratulate Rocky Henkel, Streets and Stormwater director and Emily Rowland, project engineer in the Engineering and Construction Department.
Henkel completed the American Public Works Association (APWA) Emerging Leaders Academy. This year-long national program is an intensive leadership and management training program within the context of public works.
Participants experience professional growth through collaboration with a strong network of peers. Henkel attended a two-day retreat in Kansas City, participated in monthly conference calls, completed homework assignments and a group project.
He holds a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Nebraska and has been with the City since May 2018.
Rowland is now a certified Project Engineer (P.E.) after passing an 8 hour exam on her first attempt, which had been reschedule five times due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Rowland is graduate of The University of Oklahoma and has been with the City for two years.
