 Each year, hundreds of thousands of people around the world are lost to overdoses.
Others survive but suffer permanent injury, with devastating impact to their families and
friends.
You may have been affected in some way. It could easily happen to someone you love.
International Overdose Awareness Day provides an opportunity for us to talk about and
prevent overdose in our community.
The Attorney General’s Office honored International Overdose Awareness Day by hosting an education event for employees centered on understanding how opioids work and how to administer naloxone to someone who may be experiencing an overdose. Naloxone, provided through the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services, was distributed to equip OAG staff with lifesaving medicine that can quickly reverse an opioid overdose.
Southwest Regional Field Representative Bonnie Johnson attended the City of Anadarko's International Overdose Awareness Day event on August 31. The event was designed to increase awareness of opioid and substance use, overdose prevention, treatment, recovery, and available community resources. City officials participated in the event, including Mayor John McCasland, who issued a proclamation recognizing August 31 as International Overdose Awareness Day in the City of Anadarko.
The event brought together a broad range of community partners, including law enforcement, behavioral health and treatment providers, and tribal partners along with other local agencies. SWODA, an Opioid Abatement Grant recipient, participated as a resource vendor which provided tours of their Mobile MAT Clinic. Johnson also served as a speaker during the event, sharing information about Oklahoma's opioid abatement initiatives and current and upcoming funding opportunities, available to eligible entities to address the impacts of the opioid crisis.

Over $12 million in funds was awarded by the Opioid Abatement Board to 24 political subdivisions
at the August 13th special board meeting.

School-based prevention is one of the eight priority funding strategies adopted by the Opioid Abatement Board. School-based prevention involves coordinated, evidence-based strategies delivered at school to prevent or reduce the risk of developing problem behaviors while promoting student well-being, health and academic success.

Free Opioid Prevention Training for Schools |
|
The Oklahoma READY Initiative provides participating schools with the evidence-based Botvin LifeSkills Training project at no cost, along with training, implementation support, and stipends. The program equips students with the knowledge and skills to make healthy choices, build resilience, and avoid substance use, including the misuse of prescription medications and opioids.
Oklahoma READY is a statewide opioid abatement project of the Office of the Oklahoma Attorney General, funded through Oklahoma Opioid Abatement funds and supported by the Oklahoma Opioid Abatement Board.

Title 74, sections 30.3 through 30.8 create the Political Subdivisions Opioid Abatement Grants Act. The Act’s purpose is to promote and protect the health of Oklahomans by using monetary grants to abate the opioid crisis in a comprehensive manner that includes cooperation and collaboration with political subdivisions.
Grants will fund treatment and recovery programs, assistance with co-occurring disorders and mental health issues, opioid abuse education and prevention, proper prescription efforts, and strategies to decrease the supply of narcotics across the state. Grants are rigorously reviewed and approved by the Oklahoma Opioid Abatement Board comprising of the Attorney General and appointees of the Governor, Speaker of the House, Senate President Pro Tempore, State Treasurer, State Superintendent for Public Instruction, and State Auditor and Inspector.
