 The Oklahoma READY Initiative is a statewide opioid abatement project of the Office of the Oklahoma Attorney General, funded through Oklahoma Opioid Abatement funds and supported by the Oklahoma Opioid Abatement Board.
Oklahoma READY equips students with the knowledge and skills to make healthy choices, build resilience, and avoid substance use, including the misuse of prescription medications and opioids. Participating schools receive the evidence-based Botvin LifeSkills Training project at no cost, along with training, implementation support, and stipends.

Jill Nichols, Opioid Response and Grant Coordinator, presented at the National Opioid Settlement Conference in Denver, Colorado last month.
Her presentation, Oklahoma: Scaling with Intention, shared the story of the Opioid Abatement Program in Oklahoma from the state receiving settlement funds to the leadership of Attorney General Gentner Drummond in directing the Abatement Board to initiate grant distribution. She spoke on the development of the program, challenges experienced, and lessons learned.

Oklahoma Attorney General Staff also had the opportunity to meet up with two current opioid abatement grantees from the City of Tulsa and Tulsa County. Both political subdivisions were a part of the first round of grant award recipients in 2024.

Isela Perez serves as the Opioid Abatement Statewide Coordinator with the Office of the Attorney General, where she works with partners across the state to strengthen behavioral health systems and improve community well-being. With more than 15 years of experience in the mental health and substance use field, she holds a Master of Science in Behavioral Health Counseling and has dedicated her career to advancing community engagement, suicide prevention, family and youth voice, and equitable access to care.
As a proud Mexican American, Isela brings both personal perspective and professional experience to her work, believing that access to opportunity begins with learning and leads to thriving communities. She is passionate about partnering with communities and healthcare providers to improve access to high-quality, integrated care by valuing lived experience and advancing evidence-based practices. Guided by a commitment to learning, equity, and community voice, she strives to translate lived experience into meaningful policy and systems change that improves quality of life for all.
Outside of her professional work, Isela enjoys traveling, exploring new places, and spending time with her family. She is a proud mother of three daughters who inspire her every day. They are her greatest motivation and reinforce her commitment to building stronger, healthier communities where future generations can thrive.

Title 74, sections 30.3 through 30.8 create the Political Subdivisions Opioid Abatement Grants Act. The Act’s purpose is to promote and protect the health of Oklahomans by using monetary grants to abate the opioid crisis in a comprehensive manner that includes cooperation and collaboration with political subdivisions.
Grants will fund treatment and recovery programs, assistance with co-occurring disorders and mental health issues, opioid abuse education and prevention, proper prescription efforts, and strategies to decrease the supply of narcotics across the state. Grants are rigorously reviewed and approved by the Oklahoma Opioid Abatement Board comprising of the Attorney General and appointees of the Governor, Speaker of the House, Senate President Pro Tempore, State Treasurer, State Superintendent for Public Instruction, and State Auditor and Inspector.
