Snow Emergency
Due to the winter storm forecast for the area, Mayor Owens has declared a Snow Emergency for the City of Vermilion beginning at 6:00 a.m. on Sunday.
The Snow Emergency prohibits the parking of any vehicle upon any or all of the City streets, notwithstanding any conflicting ordinances regulating off-street parking. During such emergency, no person shall park or cause or permit to be parked or abandon or leave unattended any vehicle of any kind upon such public streets.
Road Salt Supplies
Ongoing regional supply issues have resulted in limited road salt availability for Vermilion and surrounding communities.
To ensure adequate salt supplies remain available throughout the winter season, the city is conserving salt and carefully managing its use. During winter weather events, streets will continue to be plowed; however, salt application will be more limited and prioritized for main roadways, intersections, hills, curves, and other high-traffic or safety-sensitive areas.
Don't Crowd the Plow
With a team of 5 snowplow drivers and 190 streets spanning approximately 80 miles to plow, the City of Vermilion Road Crews respond with every resource available. Many times, working 12-hour shifts, snow and ice removal and street treatment are their top priority.
There is a method to where and when they plow specific areas. The plow team's first priority is to plow arterial roads. Arterial roads are main roads that bring traffic in and out of Vermilion. Once they have the arterial roads passable, they move on to residential areas. They will get residential areas passable and move back to completely clear the arterial roads and then back to completely clear the residential areas. So, if you see them in your neighborhood and the area isn't completely clear, know they will be back.
