 Reminder: Apply for Road to Zero Community Traffic Safety Grants
Applications are currently being accepted for the Road to Zero Community Traffic Safety Grants, generously funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). These grants fund 12-month projects that advance traffic safety under the pillars of Road to Zero: doubling down on what works through evidence-based strategies, advancing lifesaving technologies and championing a Safe System Approach that creates a positive safety culture. The deadline is Jan. 17, 2025 at 11:59 p.m. ET.

  This course is designed to provide prosecutors and law enforcement officers with the knowledge and skills necessary to successfully investigate and prosecute drug impaired driving cases. The course is designed to encourage a team building approach between prosecutors and officers to aid in the detection, apprehension, and prosecution of drug impaired drivers.

Title: A Wild Ride: Psychedelics & Impaired Driving (Ohio Bar Approval for 1.5-hr CLE Credit)

Description: Hallucinogens such as psilocybin, LSD, and MDMA have recently garnered research and media attention as potential therapies for depression, PTSD, and other psychological disorders. In 2021 and 2022, crime laboratories observed significant increases in psilocybin/psilocin drug seizure submissions. However, due to historically low prevalence and challenges in toxicology testing, involvement of psychedelics in impaired driving may be difficult to identify.

Lifesavers 2025 Conference
|
Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement (ARIDE) provides officers with general knowledge related to drug impaired driving and to promote the use of Drug Recognition Experts (DRE). Officers attending this course will receive an update/refresher of Standardized Field Sobriety Testing (SFSTs) and must successfully pass an SFST proficiency evaluation. This training also promotes interaction with representatives from the state's prosecution community who are encouraged to attend. The instructors for this course are all Ohio DRE certified instructors.

Prerequisite: Law enforcement officers must have had training in SFST (previously ADAP). This course is funded through an OTSO/NHTSA grant and is free for sworn Ohio law enforcement officers and prosecutors only. Tuition for out-of-state officers is $250.

Drug Recognition Expert Program
The Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) Program is a traffic safety program that focuses on the detection, apprehension and adjudication of drug-impaired drivers.
A DRE is a law enforcement officer highly trained to recognize impairment in drivers under the influence of drugs other than, or in addition to alcohol.

U.S. roadway deaths are rising again at an alarming rate. People are still driving recklessly. Drunk, drugged and distracted driving are on the rise. Just telling people to drive safely isn’t enough. We need to do more. We can do more! Passengers need to play a more active role in their own safety and that of others.
That is why We Save Lives and the National Road Safety Foundation launched The National Passenger Safety Campaign, bringing together 60 other organizations that believe that it’s time to focus on the passenger, and not just the driver. The goal is to promote safe driving practices and prevent unsafe ones by empowering passengers to SPEAK UP when their lives are in danger due to a reckless driver.
In 2023, the National Highway Traffic Safety Association (NHTSA) added the campaign to their national calendar. National Passenger Safety Week is now an ongoing event, the last week in January of every year.
Passengers can make a difference.
One courageous voice can change one deadly choice!

Statistics show that in 2022:
- 14.4% of all roadway fatalities were passengers in passenger vehicles
- 56% of teen passenger deaths occurred in vehicles driven by another teenager

Crash Data Bulletins: 88 county-specific data bulletins have now been updated for fall 2024 and are available online. OTSO partners with the Ohio State Highway Patrol to update and publish the bulletins every 6 months.
They were designed to be used in driving schools so instructors can adapt behind-the-wheel training to their local area. But they are also available publicly to help educate all drivers on local-level driving trends, dangerous roads and intersections, and seat belt usage.
