National Secure Your Load Day June 6, 2024
As Founder of Secure Your Load, Robin Abel wishes to share a personal message this year:
This year marks 20 years since my daughter Maria was critically injured by an unsecured load, driving home from work. That event changed our lives forever. https://secureyourload.com/Documents/Robin's%20Story.mp4
Do you feel safe driving behind that truck ahead of you…. you know the one with the load of items not securely fastened to the vehicle? I too often hear that these are freak accidents but in truth they are frequent incidents, deadly and totally preventable. What is a secured load? Bottomline, all loads need to be securely fastened to the vehicle at all times. You do not get to say, it is below the truck bed or it is heavy or light or crammed in, or you only secure what you think needs to be secured, those are not secured loads. You must secure all loads at all times. Use good nets, tarps and/or straps. There are no “do overs” in the world of safety!
While this is a personal message, we have to talk about “data.” In 2022, there were 895 deaths, 17,203 injuries and 98,502 property damage crashes caused by unsecured loads. Sadly, the numbers have increased as they have in all other sectors of road safety. All of these people had stories.
There is power in numbers and last year 46 states participated in Secure Your Load Day safety campaign educating thousands of drivers on the importance of good load securement. Thank you to all of you who support this campaign, together we are saving lives!
“Button it up America…..Secure Your Loads” “Secure Your Load as if everyone you love is driving in the car behind you!” - Robin Abel, Founder Secure Your Load www.secureyourload.com

4th of July Impaired Driving Prevention Campaign July 1 - July 7, 2024
We all love to celebrate the 4th of July with family, friends, food, and fireworks, but all too often the festivities turn tragic on our nation's roads. The fact is, this American holiday also brings increased drinking and impaired driving with potential deadly consequences:
- From 2018 to 2022, there were 2,228 traffic crash fatalities during the Fourth of July holiday period.
- 487 people died in motor vehicle crashes over the July 4th holiday period in 2022.
This 4th of July, NHTSA focuses on social norming campaigns. However, enforcement material is available for areas that choose to plan high-visibility enforcement.
- Social Norming
- Buzzed Driving Is Drunk Driving
- If You Feel Different, You Drive Different
- Enforcement
- Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over
- Drive High, Get a DUI.

Speed Prevention Campaign July 8 - July 31, 2024
In 2022, speeding killed 12,151 people — accounting for 29% of total traffic fatalities.
Join us to educate the public about the dangers of speeding. From July 8–31, Speeding Catches Up With You, a social norming campaign, will run nationwide.
States may consider running an enforcement campaign, Speeding Slows You Down, in place of social norming if high-visibility enforcement is planned. Resources are available to encourage drivers to drive at the speed limit and to educate people about the dangers of going too fast, including information related to speed and road conditions.

National Safety Council Introduces Employer Traffic Safety Program in Ohio |
|
|
In Ohio, transportation incidents are the leading cause of occupational fatalities at 39%.
Our Driving Concern is a program of National Safety Council that provides organizations with resources and tools to help reduce traffic crashes involving their employees both on and off the job. NSC is proud to partner with the Ohio Traffic Safety Office on the program with funding by the National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA).
Motor vehicle crashes are one of the primary causes of work-related injuries and fatalities and employers who provide insurance to their employees feel the financial impacts of injuries from crashes off the job as well. Car crashes affect not only the individual worker but also their family members and their coworkers. Through free resources, including training, employers are better able to understand risky driving behaviors and use proven methods to prevent crashes, ultimately saving lives and reducing costs.
The Our Driving Concern program emphasizes employee training, multi-faceted ongoing education and messaging to promote safe driving behaviors and make the roads safer for everyone.
“Studies show people trust information from their employer, and employers are an essential catalyst to changing the culture of traffic safety behaviors,” said Katie Mueller from the National Safety Council.
The program offers free and customized materials for organizations of all sizes and industries in Ohio. Employers and employees can access the information online oh.ourdrivingconcern.org. Whether you are a supervisor in a large corporation or a small business of five people, our resources are for you! Sign up for our newsletter to receive information on how to get involved and access new resources being added soon.
OTSO offers materials for numerous traffic safety campaigns, including impaired driving, restraint usage, distracted driving, speeding and motorcycles. Utilizing these free materials can make an impact that can reach beyond your community.

Faxed and e-mailed forms will still be accepted, but this online link will be updated when new traffic safety materials are added to our inventory.

Crash Data Bulletins:
In partnership with the Ohio State Highway Patrol, OTSO will biannually publish 88 county-specific crash data bulletins. This tool was designed for driver training schools to help educate young drivers on local-level driving trends, dangerous roads and intersections, and seatbelt usage. But they are publicly available for use by parents, teachers, and other traffic safety partners to display and share at community events to promote traffic safety and better inform all drivers about crash risks in the areas they drive every day.
The spring 2024 data sheets for every county in Ohio are now available for download HERE.
