Welcome to the 2025-2026 School Year
Welcome to the new school year! Summers fly by. As we prepare for a new school year, the State Board of Education wants you to know that we truly appreciate all that you do for Resident Educators and all of Ohio’s students. Thank you for your time and investment in the teaching profession! You will find information about the most recent change to the Resident Educator (RE) Program, in the article below and the RESA requirement being removed from the Resident Educator Program. Please review this article to understand what the RESA elimination means for completion of the RE Program moving forward.
Welcome to those of you who are new to the Program Coordinator role and please feel free to reach out to us with any questions. You can email us at REProgram@sboe.ohio.gov Please be sure to register for the Program Coordinator Virtual Regional Networks mentioned in an article below and the PC Meetups also in an article below, which will provide you with great information and help you connect with other Program Coordinators to share and discuss all things Resident Educator.
RESA Requirement Removed from Resident Educator Program
With the recent passage of Ohio House Bill 96 on July 1, 2025, the Resident Educator Summative Assessment (RESA) has been eliminated from the Ohio Resident Educator (RE) Program. Resident educators in their first and second year of teaching must still be registered in the RE Program and complete all the requirements of the RE Program and the requirements developed by the employing local district. Program coordinators must register resident educators and enter completion criteria in the Connected Ohio Records for Educators (CORE) online system for resident educators to advance their resident educator license to a professional license.
Educators who have successfully completed all Resident Educator Program completion criteria except RESA are eligible to advance their resident educator license to a professional license and may complete the application through their CORE Dashboard. Note that educators who hold an Alternative Resident Educator license must also complete all other requirements of the Alternative Resident Educator Licensure Pathway before advancing their license.
Please note that with the elimination of the RESA, the role of Facilitator has also been eliminated from the RE Program.
Program Coordinator (PC) Virtual Network Meetings
Registration is now open for the September 2025 Resident Educator Program Coordinator Network Meetings. The State Board of Education is hosting two (virtual) meetings to bring program coordinators together to engage with colleagues, share insights and strategies for program implementation, and hear from the agency's Resident Educator Program staff. Participants can choose to attend one of the following meeting dates:
- September 16, 9:00-11:30 a.m.
- September 25, 1:00-3:30 p.m.
Two dates were scheduled to allow for smaller numbers of participants per meeting. The same content will be shared at both meetings. Register here by September 11. Registered participants will receive an email containing meeting access information one week prior to the meeting date. Confirmation is not generated at registration. Send questions to REProgram@sboe.ohio.gov.

2025 Survey Results from Resident Educators and Mentors
In the spring of 2025, we sent a survey to all registered resident educators and mentors. We received a great return of responses and are excited to share those results with you at our PC Networks. We hope to use this data to drive program improvements and are excited to hear your feedback on the results.
Resident Educator Program Registration Window Now Open
The window to register eligible resident educators for the Resident Educator Program in CORE opened on August 1, 2025, and will close on November 15, 2025. All teachers holding a Resident Educator License, an Alternative Resident Educator License, a one-year out-of-state license, and an Interim RE license and who meet the program eligibility criteria must be registered in CORE. Those who hold a supplemental license with a Resident Educator license and the two-year provisional STEM license are also eligible. Failure to register eligible resident educators could result in a delay in advancing their license to a professional educator license. Step-by-step directions for how to register resident educators in CORE can be found in the Resident Educator Program Coordinator User Manual housed on the State Board of Education’s CORE Reporting Requirements webpage.
New Mentor Training Events Available Until December 1
All new mentors must successfully complete the Mentor Academy training to become certified state mentors. Training events, scheduled by local Educational Service Centers (ESCs), are listed in STARS. Registration and fees are required and vary by location. Training is provided both in-person and virtually. Read the registration details in STARS for locations and dates and be sure to follow the directions for the virtual training registration. Virtual training includes two required components: synchronous and asynchronous. Dates for virtual synchronous sessions are listed in the registration information. Contact the ESC directly if you have questions. All mentor training must be completed by December 1.
