Good morning,
This message is to update you on the important change regarding the licensing authority of School Psychologists currently regulated by the State Board of Education of Ohio. Starting January 1, 2025, the Ohio Board of Psychology will take over the responsibility for issuing and renewing School Psychologist licenses. This change is due to House Bill 509 (HB509). The rule package to implement HB509 has been filed by the Board and approved by the Joint Committee on Agency Rule Review.
Key Information Regarding the Transition
New Licensing Authority
Beginning January 1, 2025, the Ohio Board of Psychology will handle all licensing applications, renewals, and compliance issues.
New Applications
- The State Board of Education of Ohio will continue to process new school psychology licenses through December 2024.
- Starting January 1, 2025, the Ohio Board of Psychology will handle new applications, which will have a fee of $300 as set by law.
License Renewal
- School Psychologists will need to renew their licenses in September 2025 using the Ohio Board of Psychology e-Licensing portal.
- The renewal fee will be $300, as set by law. License holders will receive a reminder email in August 2025 with renewal details.
- School Psychologists whose current license expiration date is July 1, 2025, will not be required to renew on that date. Since their license will transition to the Ohio Board of Psychology on January 1, 2025, they will need to follow the rules and renewal schedule of the Ohio Board of Psychology. Their new expiration date and renewal deadline will be September 30, 2025. Failure to register and pay the quinquennial registration fee by the 30th day of September of each year that ends with a zero or a five will result in expiration of the license.
Continuing Education Requirements
- Continuing education (CE) requirements will be waived in 2025. School Psychologists will not need to provide proof of CEs until 2030.
- Licensed School Psychologists will need to complete 50 hours of continuing education over a five-year period. This includes four hours focused on ethics, professional conduct, or cultural competence.
Reason for the Change
This transition is due to the passing of House Bill 509, which aims to simplify and standardize the licensing process for all psychologists in Ohio.
