Public hearings scheduled for FirstEnergy rate increase
The PUCO has scheduled three public hearings regarding FirstEnergy’s applications to increase distribution rates.
The local public hearings will be held as follows:
- April 3, 2025, 5 p.m.
Cleveland Public Library Learning Commons space 325 Superior Avenue Cleveland, OH 44114
- April 7, 2025, 6 p.m.
Akron-Summit County Public Library 60 S. High Street Akron, OH 44326
- April 14, 2025, 6 p.m.
Board of Lucas County Commissioners One Government Center, Suite 800 Toledo, OH 43604

Hazmat training grants application still available
The application period for hazardous materials is still open!
Through the annual hazardous materials training grant program, educational institutions and local governments across Ohio are awarded grants for training to best respond to incidents related to hazardous materials. In 2024, the PUCO authorized a total of $800,000 to 27 local governments and educational institutions.
Applications will be accepted until April 30, 2025.

Friedeman reappointed to PUCO
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine has reappointed Lawrence K. Friedeman to the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio. Friedeman was appointed to the PUCO by Governor John R. Kasich in 2017 and reappointed to a second term by Governor Mike DeWine in 2020. Friedeman’s current term expires April 10, 2025, and his new five-year term starts April 11th.
Commissioner Friedeman was confirmed by the Ohio Senate on March 19.

Special Reconnect Order available until April 18
The Special Reconnect Order (SRO) is still available! The SRO helps Ohioans to reconnect or maintain electric or natural gas service.
Any residential customer of a PUCO-regulated electric or natural gas company may take advantage of the provisions contained in the order once per winter heating season.
There is no income eligibility requirement to use the Special Reconnect Order. The SRO runs through April 18, 2025.
