Columbia Gas of Ohio cited for gas pipeline safety violation
The PUCO has ordered Columbia Gas of Ohio to pay $250,000 for violations of natural gas pipeline safety regulations related to a November 2020 house fire in South Point, Ohio.
A PUCO investigation alleged that Columbia personnel repairing a damaged pipeline ultimately led to a house fire in South Point, Ohio on Nov. 23, 2020. The incident destroyed a house and three vehicles, causing over $800,000 in property damage, and injured a utility employee.

FirstEnergy corporate separation report filed
On September 13, the PUCO issued an audit report of FirstEnergy’s Ohio electric distribution companies’ compliance with corporate separation laws and related PUCO regulations.
The report identifies 23 requirements in which the FirstEnergy companies are compliant, 13 opportunities for improvement, 8 minor violations, and zero major violations.

Winter Reconnect Order approved
The PUCO has issued the Winter Reconnect Order (WRO) for the upcoming heating season, October 18 through April 15, 2022.
Any residential customer of a PUCO-regulated electric or natural gas company may take advantage of the WRO. Last winter heating season, more than 181,200 Ohioans used the WRO.

Each year, the PUCO issues the annual rail statistics book, which focuses on statewide trends for public grade crossings.
The 2020 rail stats book is now available, along with county-specific data.

Ohio Power Siting Board approves solar energy projects; schedules rule review workshops
The Ohio Power Siting Board (OPSB) has approved applications filed by Mark Center Solar Project LLC, Wheatsborough Solar LLC, and Hardin Solar Energy III LLC to construct solar‑powered electric generating facilities in Defiance, Erie, and Hardin counties, respectively.
The OPSB also approved an application filed by Columbia Gas of Ohio, Inc. to construct a natural gas pipeline in Delaware and Union counties.

The OPSB has also scheduled three public workshops in October to gather input about administrative rules regarding applications for electric transmission facilities, gas pipelines and electric generation facilities (including solar energy facilities).

Draft electric transmission report available for public comment
The Ohio Power Siting Board has issued a draft report for public comment analyzing high-voltage electric transmission line planning.
The draft report examines the cost effectiveness of electric transmission planning in Ohio, the scope of the OPSB’s jurisdiction, and processes used to site electric transmission lines in Ohio.
