Greene County ESC Supports FASD Prevention, Awareness
September is Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) Awareness and Prevention Month. To help raise awareness, the Greene County Educational Service Center (GCESC) hosted a "We See FASD Awareness and Prevention Day" on Sept. 9 (FASD Awareness Day) for community and school-based mental health professionals, truancy support specialists, and prevention specialists. Participants received essential resources to share within their schools and communities, expanding FASD awareness and prevention efforts across the region.
GCESC staff are also supporting the Red Shoes Rock advocacy campaign throughout the month of September. Community members are invited to wear red shoes to help start the conversation about FASD, the leading cause of preventable birth defects, and paint small rocks which are then placed in the community, creating a powerful symbol to increase visibility of this often-invisible disability. In addition, GCESC staff hosted two virtual Lunch & Learn sessions to equip professionals, parents, and community partners with practical tools and strategies to promote FASD awareness and prevention throughout Southwest Ohio.
"GCESC is deeply committed to helping our region approach FASD with heart," said Grace Schoessow, director of the center's Infant Early Childhood Mental Health Program. "Under the banner 'We See FASD,' we are offering help, hope, and TLC — recognizing the unique needs of children and families impacted by FASD and equipping professionals to respond with understanding, compassion, and effective strategies."
