Wireless Calls to 988 Get a More Localized Response with Georouting
The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline recently announced that the process to start routing cellular phone calls to 988 contact centers based on the caller’s approximate location, versus by area code – known as “georouting” – began last month with two major U.S. wireless carriers, that combined, make up about half of all wireless calls to 988. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and the 988 Network Administrator, Vibrant Emotional Health, have been working with all major U.S. cell phone carriers for more than a year to improve call routing to 988 so that callers on a cell phone can be connected more locally to centers that are better equipped to provide nearby resources and services.

2024 Women’s Treatment and FASD Symposium
OhioMHAS hosted the 2024 Women's Treatment and Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) Symposium on Sept. 19-20. This year's conference focused on SUD and Family Impact and FASD: Painting a Portrait of Diversity throughout Ohio. All regions of the state were represented, and individual attendees hailed from more than 36 counties. In addition to learning about the latest research and advances in clinical practices, attendees heard from dynamic keynote presenters (Dr. Stephanie Covington and Dr. Jeffrey Wozniak) and had an opportunity to interact with women and caregivers with lived experience.
Said one participant, “I had little knowledge about FASD and this was a great opportunity to learn. With trends I see in the mental health field, I believe there are many children I’ve personally worked with who may have had this consideration ... now I know how to better screen and better serve the population in the future.”
The Symposium also featured the presentation of the Hope Taft Awards, which honor individuals for their work to spread awareness, advocate for FASD prevention, and/or make a significant impact on individuals and families with FASD. This year’s award recipients were Bonnie Hubbard-Nicosia from the Ohio Department of Medicaid, (Professional awardee), and Susan Caperna, (Parent/Community Member awardee).

Veterans Day is Nov. 11, 2024. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and the Veterans Day National Committee have released a Veterans Day Teachers Resource Guide. There are about 18 million veterans living among us, in every state and territory, and from every walk of life. Many students in your community's classrooms may be the son, daughter, cousin, or other relative of a veteran or current servicemember. By engaging in discussion about these crucial members of our society, students will better-appreciate the freedoms we have because of the men and women who have served in defense of the nation. |
