MRSS Statewide Expansion RFP Bidders' Conference Planned for August 13
The Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (OhioMHAS) will host an MRSS Statewide Expansion RFP Bidders' Conference on Tuesday, Aug. 13 at 1:30 p.m. The Request for Proposals for the statewide expansion of Mobile Response and Stabilization Services (MRSS) is posted on the Ohio Buys platform.
This Ohio Buys solicitation opportunity opened on Aug. 1 and will close on Aug. 30 at 5:00 p.m. The Bidders' Conference will include a slide deck and transcript that will be shared publicly on the MRSS Funding Opportunities page. All questions will be responded to in writing on the Funding Opportunities page for the MRSS Expansion RFP. For the Bidders' Conference, questions may be sent to mh-preventionservices@mha.ohio.gov.
Recovery Events Funding Request for Expression of Interest
OhioMHAS is requesting expressions of interest from prevention, treatment, and/or recovery supports providers; community coalitions; recovery community organizations; peer-run organizations; housing providers; faith-based organizations; schools; and other non-profit community organizations for up to $25,000 in Recovery Events funding. Organizations must have a federal tax identification number (FTID). Recovery Events funding is used to host activities, events, or services to raise awareness about and celebrate recovery from mental illness, substance use, and/or co-occurring disorders through September 2024. This funding opportunity is supported by State Opioid and Stimulant Response (SOS) and Mental Health Block Grant (MHBG) funds and must be spent by Sept. 29, 2024. To submit your expression of interest, please complete all questions on the Microsoft form by 3:00 p.m. on Aug 16.
Older Adult Suicide Prevention Funding Opportunity
The Ohio Suicide Prevention Foundation (OSPF) has announced grant funding totaling $50,000 for programs supporting the prevention of older adult suicide in Ohio. The Jerry Williams Memorial Fund was established in 2023, with support from OSPF, to honor the memory of Jerry Williams, who lost his life to suicide at age 74. The fund is dedicated to saving the lives of older adults, a group often lost in suicide prevention outreach activities.
Eligible applicants include Ohio-based suicide prevention organizations, programs, services, and efforts targeting Ohioans 65 and older. The deadline to apply is Aug. 16. For more information about the Jerry Williams Memorial Fund, contact Sandy Williams at jerrywilliamsfund@gmail.com.

SAMHSA’s Prevention Day 2025 — Call for Abstracts
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration has issued a call for abstracts for the 21st Prevention Day, which will be held Feb. 3, 2025. The 2025 theme is "Telling the Prevention Story."
This national event brings together 4,000 people to advance substance use prevention. Share your compelling story – the successes, challenges, and lessons learned from your substance use prevention strategy, policy, program, practice, or research:
- Preventing initiation of substance use
- Preventing progression of substance use
- Preventing harms associated with substance use
The deadline to submit an abstract is 11:59 p.m. on Sept. 4.

Montgomery County Overdose Awareness Day — Aug. 14
The Montgomery County Alcohol, Drug Addiction and Mental Health Services Board and local partners are hosting a community Overdose Awareness Day event on Aug. 14 from 5:00-8:00 p.m. at Levitt Pavilion in Dayton. The event will feature harm-reduction resources, prevention and treatment services, live music, food, giveaways, and more.

Dr. Shantel Thomas, CEO, A Sound Mind Counseling Service, will provide the keynote presentation, The Importance of Connection, Empowerment and Engagement When Helping Clients Work Through Trauma. 2024 Recovering Peoples Convention — Sept. 16
Ohio Citizen Advocates for Addiction Recovery (OCAAR), with support from OhioMHAS and Ohio Recovery Housing, will host the 2024 Recovering Peoples Convention on Sept. 16 at the Embassy Suites by Hilton – Dublin. The Convention is free and will a space for Ohio's recovery community to gather and set the agenda for recovery-oriented policy in the state. Supporting Veterans and First Responders: Lethal Means Safety Training — Sept. 18
The Mental Health and Recovery Board of Clark, Greene, and Madison Counties is partnering with Lifeside Ohio, the Greene County Suicide Prevention Coalition, and others to host a free Supporting Veterans and First Responders: Lethal Means Safety training on Sept. 18 at the Greene County Veterans Services building in Xenia. Participants will learn about the unique culture of the military, first responders, and the impact on mental health, as well as how behavioral health professionals can provide assistance. Veterans, first responders, and families are welcome. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. CEUs are available.
Save the Date! Women’s Treatment and FASD Symposium — Sept. 19-20
OhioMHAS will host the Women’s Treatment and FASD Symposium as part of the state’s FASD Awareness and Prevention month in September. This year’s themes are: Sept 19, Women’s Treatment | SUD and Family Impact, and Sept 20, FASD | Painting a Portrait of Diversity throughout Ohio. The Symposium will take place Sept.19-20 at the Embassy Suites by Hilton, 2700 Corporate Exchange Drive, Columbus.
2024 Trumbull County Resiliency Summit — Sept. 27
The Trumbull County Family & Children First Council, in partnership with the Trauma-Informed Care Steering Committee and the SAAVE Coalition (Survivor Advocacy, Awareness and Voices for Empowerment), will present Trauma and Resiliency in the World of Human Trafficking on Sept. 27 at the Eastwood Event Centre in Niles.
This event will feature keynote speaker Barbara Freeman, a human trafficking survivor who was forced into human trafficking when she was 15 and came out of trafficking in April 2009. She went on to be one of the first graduates of CATCH Court (Changing Actions to Change Habits), a specialized docket in the Franklin County Municipal Court for women in the system who are victims of human trafficking. She is the CEO of The Freeman Project, which includes a home for human trafficking survivors in Columbus. Additionally attendees will hear from experts who will provide information regarding how to recognize both sex and labor trafficking, how to respond, and how to take a proactive approach in combatting human trafficking.
Other presenters include Jean-Philippe “JP” Rigaud, Special Agent, Ohio Attorney General’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation; Judge Renee DiSalvo, Youngstown Municipal Court, Founder of GRACE Court, a specialized docket for victims of human trafficking; Motivational Speaker and Humorist Karen Vadino; and Hannah Swift, Comprehensive Case Manager, Gracehaven. A panel of local experts from CSB, the Child Advocacy Center, the Board of Developmental Disabilities, and others will discuss how human trafficking impacts the community including children, teens, and older adults.

Midwest Suicide Prevention & Mental Health Summit — Oct. 17-18
The Ohio Suicide Prevention Foundation (OSPF) will host the 2024 Midwest Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Summit on Oct. 17-18 at the Greater Columbus Convention Center.
The Summit will focus on providers of suicide prevention across the Midwest, from coalitions and organizations dedicated to preventing suicide and promoting mental health wellness, prevention professionals, health care professionals, veteran-serving organizations, state and community leaders, and others dedicated to community solutions to address the public health problem of suicide and mental health.
Workshops and keynote speakers will cover a range of topics related to mental health and suicide prevention, including:
- Adult male suicide and Man Therapy
- Access to lethal means
- Veterans and first responders
- The crisis system and Communities of Care (including 988)
- Employers/business community role in mental health and suicide prevention
- Access to care and insurance
- Youth mental health and social media
- Suicide prevention in high-risk communities
- Policy and advocacy
