NIMH Releases Annual Update to Strategic Plan for Research and FY 2022 Progress Report
The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) recently released the 2023 update to the NIMH Strategic Plan for Research to keep pace with evolving scientific approaches and research priorities. The Strategic Plan, originally published in 2020, guides NIMH grantees, potential grant applicants, and staff in the design and implementation of future research.
Most notably, the updated Strategic Plan emphasizes NIMH’s commitment to funding research that aims to reduce mental health disparities and promote health equity. In addition, NIMH updated the title of Goal 4 to “Advance Mental Health Services to Strengthen Public Health” to better align with the research objectives outlined in that goal.
NIMH also developed a companion Progress Report, highlighting significant accomplishments made during fiscal year 2022. And we encourage you to visit the Progress pages, where we feature NIMH-supported research that is advancing each of the four goals of the Strategic Plan.

Peg’s Foundation and Summit ESC Partner to Improve Mental Health Prevention for Students
Summit ESC and Peg’s Foundation recently announced plans to partner on the development of a county-wide system of Behavioral Health and Wellness Coordinators (BHWC) for proactive prevention and early intervention for middle school and high school students in Summit County. Coventry Local Schools and Tallmadge City Schools will be the first districts to pilot this program, set to take place during the 2023-2024 and 2024-2025 school years.
The partnership aims to address the disconnect between schools and mental health and wellness services in Summit County. By equipping local school districts with the necessary awareness, staffing, and training, the program intends to bridge the gap in mental health service delivery, ensuring students receive the support they need.
With the new program, Coventry and Tallmadge schools will soon have a Student Assistance Program (SAP), which includes BHWCs developing and maintaining ongoing district-wide student assistance programs with referral processes providing services to at-risk youth and their families. The partnership aims to replicate this program across Summit County after the pilot phase.
