Southeast Trauma Collaborative to Host Screening of New Documentary
The Southeast Trauma-Informed Care Collaborative will host a special screening of a new documentary titled From Both Sides of the Desk at the Drexel Theater in Columbus on April 29 at 7:00 p.m. This 21-minute film from producers Jennifer Schwirian (Southeast Trauma Informed Care Collaborative) and Brian Plow (Ohio University), tells the story of two women with intensive trauma histories and the new approaches to mental health treatment that led to healing and resilience. It is also the story of the professionals who are leading the way in advocating for Trauma Informed Care, placing hope, resilience and empowerment at the center of mental healthcare in Southeast Ohio.

Federal Mental Health Awareness Training Grants
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services will host an informational webinar on April 6 from 3:00-4:00 p.m. to highlight new Mental Health Awareness Training Grants available on the Grants Finder Tool on SchoolSafety.gov. The purpose of the grant program is to: (1) train individuals (e.g., school personnel and emergency services personnel including fire department and law enforcement personnel, veterans, armed services members and their families, etc.) to recognize the signs and symptoms of mental disorders and how to safely de-escalate crisis situations involving individuals with a mental illness and (2) provide education on resources available in the community for individuals with a mental illness and other relevant resources, including how to establish linkages with school and/or community-based mental health agencies. The deadline to apply is May 1.
Youth Marijuana Risks/Perceptions Survey
Prevention Action Alliance (PAA) is working with the Kent State University Center for Public Policy and Health and the State to develop effective drug prevention messaging targeting Ohio youth. To help inform the messaging, PAA has created a brief survey to learn more about perceptions of risk, beliefs, and concerns about youth and young adult marijuana use. Eligible participants must be youth and young adults living in Ohio between the ages of 12-25. Individuals can complete this survey whether or not they have ever used marijuana. The survey should only take about 10 minutes to complete, and responses will be anonymous and kept confidential. Survey participants will have the opportunity to register to win one of several Amazon.com e-gift cards, including several valued at $200 each. Questions? Please email Deric Kenne at dkenne@kent.edu.
OhioRISE Launch Report Update
The Ohio Department of Medicaid (ODM) regularly distributes launch reports that contain details related to OhioRISE (Resilience through Integrated Systems and Excellence), a specialized managed care program offered to children and youth with complex behavioral health needs that span multiple systems of care. The program launched July 1, 2022, as ODM’s first Next Generation initiative.
As of March 23, 18,963 children and youth are enrolled in OhioRISE. Launch Reports include additional up-to-date statistics; heartfelt impact stories from involved youth, families, and their teams; and helpful resources like crisis hotlines and office hours.

New Distracted Driving Law Resources
If you were not aware, a new driving while texting law in Ohio became effective on April 4, 2023. There are many components of this law, and the Ohio Injury Prevention Partnership wants to share some resources your agency or partners can utilize to help explain and promote this law with the end goal of reducing motor vehicle crashes injuries and fatalities related to distracted driving. Please see the below links from the Ohio Department of Transportation for resources regarding this new law. The new distracted driving law can be found in Section 4511.204 of the Ohio Revised Code.

Understanding Menopause and Substance Use — April 7
The Women's Caucus, in partnership with the American Public Health Association ATOD Section, is hosting an Understanding Menopause and Substance Use: Considerations for Supporting People Through the Change of Life webinar on April 7 from noon-1:00 p.m. This free webinar will focus on the intersections of menopause and substance use from people with lived experience, clinicians, and researchers.
Recovery Housing Learning Session — April 13
The OhioMHAS Office of Recovery Supports is hosting a virtual listening session via Microsoft Teams on April 13 at 2:00 p.m. We are seeking people with lived experience to join our Recovery Housing Improvement Stakeholder Group. This includes current or former residents of recovery housing and family members/friends of recovery housing residents. The agenda will focus on:
- Background on the Recovery Housing Improvement Workgroup
- CFPT (Consumer Family Partnership Team) Funds available to individuals with lived experience to compensate their participation in the workgroup
- Meeting schedule and contact information to join the workgroup

Recover Out Loud Celebration — April 19
Ohio Citizen Advocates for Addiction Recovery (OCAAR) will host its Second Annual Recover Out Loud Celebration on April 19 from 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. at the Athletic Club of Columbus. The event will be a space for people in recovery and recovery supports providers from across the state to gather and celebrate recovery out loud. The celebration will include lunch, opportunities for education and recognition of leaders in the field statewide and nationally. The deadline to register is April 13.

NAMIOhio Annual Meeting and Advocacy Day at the Ohio Statehouse — May 3
Save the Date! NAMIOhio will hold its 2023 Statehouse Advocacy Day and Annual Meeting Luncheon at the Ohio Statehouse Atrium on May 3. NAMIOhio will be highlighting the need for person centered mental health care and sharing its message with the state legislature to protect investments in the state budget that will improve the lives of Ohioans impacted by mental illness. The event is free, and a catered lunch will be provided for all attendees. The lunch program will take place from 11:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. with legislative meetings to follow in the afternoon.

Resilience in a Complex Environment: Trauma Conference — May 8
The Hancock County ADAMHS Board will host its 2023 Trauma Conference, Resilience in a Complex Environment: Practical Approaches for Intervention, from 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. on May 8 at the University of Findlay. The conference is aimed at students, professionals, and individuals looking to increase their knowledge of trauma and resilience. The conference will provide an overview of the system of care framework and its importance, practical approaches for intervention and resilience building, including the voice of those with lived experience. Presenters include Dr. Bobbi Beale and Dr. Michael Ungar.
Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost's 31st Annual Two Days in May Conference — May 8-9
Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost this week announced registration is open for the 31st annual Two Days in May Conference on Victim Assistance, scheduled for May 8-9 at the Greater Columbus Convention Center. The Attorney General’s Office, conference partners and workshop presenters from across disciplines will offer an array of professional-development opportunities for victim advocates who serve their communities and the criminal justice system. The theme, "Empowering Survivors to Rebuild Lives," reflects the work being done in the world of advocacy every single day. Cost is $125.

2023 ASAP Drug Summit — May 26
The Alliance for Substance Abuse Prevention (ASAP) Coalition will hold its 2023 Drug Summit from 8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m. on May 26 on the Kent State University-Trumbull Campus. The morning will consist of an opening presentation by Dr. Brad Lander, Clinical Director of the Addiction Medicine Department at The Ohio State University. Dr. Lander will be followed by the day's keynote speaker, Sam Quinones, an American journalist from Los Angeles who is best known for chronicling of the opioid crisis in America through his books Dreamland and The Least of Us. After lunch, attendees will have the opportunity to hear Karen Vadino, a nationally recognized, motivational speaker, trainer and humorist. Cost is $60. Developing Competency in MH Treatment for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Individuals Two-Part Training Series
The Cleveland Hearing and Speech Center, in partnership with OhioMHAS and teh Cuyahoga County Board of Developmental Disabilities, is offering a free, two-part Developing Competency in Mental Health Treatment for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Individuals training series. All sessions are virtual. ASL interpreters and Zoom captioning will be available. Upcoming training dates include: Part 1 (May 19) and Part 2 (May 22 or June 2).

Families for Depression Awareness is hosting a free Setting Boundaries for Healthy Relationships and Caregiver Self Care webinar on May 25 from 7:00-8:30 p.m. In this webinar, Jenny Woodworth, LISW, will define boundaries as they relate to familial relationships. Participants will learn why boundaries are necessary when supporting a loved one with a mood disorder and how to apply boundaries as a form of self-care.
