House Bill 339 - Purple Heart License Plates for Surviving Spouses
Rep. Bird voted in support of House Bill 339 - legislation to allow surviving spouses of Purple Heart recipients to retain or obtain “Purple Heart” license plates.
Under current law, surviving spouses are not permitted to retain or apply for a Purple Heart license plate following the death of the recipient. House Bill 339 changes that by allowing an eligible surviving spouse who has not remarried to retain or obtain the specialty plate if the deceased recipient was issued, or qualified for, a Purple Heart license plate. The legislation was inspired by a constituent whose great-grandfather, a Purple Heart recipient with whom he shared a close bond, passed away. Following his death, the constituent's grandmother wished to continue displaying the Purple Heart license plate in honor of her late husband’s service and sacrifice, but current law did not allow her to do so.
To qualify, a surviving spouse must apply with the Registrar of Motor Vehicles and provide documentation of the deceased recipient’s Purple Heart award, along with any additional information required by the registrar. Eligible spouses must also comply with all applicable vehicle registration requirements and pay standard registration taxes and fees.
The legislation awaits consideration in the Ohio Senate.
