I am greatly honored to represent Ohio's 80th House District, covering Miami and southern Darke counties. If you are ever in Columbus, please feel free to call and schedule a visit at The People's Office of District 80.
House Bill 507 Passes Unanimously
During session this week, the Ohio House of Representatives unanimously passed my bill - House Bill 507 - legislation to strengthen Ohio’s human trafficking laws.
H.B. 507 will help law enforcement go after human traffickers. If a person knowingly receives from a trafficked person or prostitute money that was exchanged for sex, that person can be charged with a third-degree felony. If the trafficked person is a minor the charge is a second-degree felony.
I am glad to be part of Ohio’s General Assembly which takes law and order seriously and is committed to punishing criminals.
I Oppose Government Overreach
I'm opposed to H.B. 488, which received its first hearing in House Agriculture Committee this week.
This bill seeks to make demands of private businesses which I see as glaring examples of government overreach. This bill would require amusement parks to maintain a list on their website of all rides, updated live each day, reporting which rides are closed for maintenance and when they reopen. The bill seeks to spare visitors from the disappointment that a particular ride is closed.
Yet my objection is: why aren’t free-market principles sufficient to drive consumer behavior and business practices? This is a case where the government must keep its hands off private businesses.
Increasing AES Bills
My office has received more than 300 messages from my constituents and from those of other districts concerning their increasing AES electric bills. We have been working to help them address their complaints.
The unfortunate reality is that inflation has caused prices to increase everywhere, including electricity prices. Increasing electric bills are something we are all living with. Yet some people appear to have true errors on their bills where they are being charged for unrealistic kilowatt usage. One consumer’s February bill went from $700 to over $1,900. The amount of power usage charged appears to be extremely unlikely in this case.
If you think you have a true error in charges, please send your bill to my office with the kilowatt usage highlighted that you believe to be an error. If customers are being charged wrongly, we will do our best to help you get a correction made.
Constituent Outreach
One of Tippecanoe High School’s classes sent letters to my office expressing the concerns they have about issues they are facing. I was delighted to see students engaging their elected officials in the Statehouse. Their teachers are doing an outstanding job teaching them to be engaged in their community.
They are to be applauded! I sent a written response to each of them and in various ways explained how they might expect their concern to be addressed in the future. All of these students expressed themselves exceptionally. Well done!
